What kinds of problems will I have if I replace my bad 360 with a 258?

less power, DO NOT believe anything anyone says about a 258 having gobs of torque etc:-
Those that say so have never driven a 360 that is good.
and a 360 is laughable next to a 401
If you have a 258, get a t-18 or a good t-15

hmmmmmm...maybe I better look at 401's then! :D
Numbers posted on Offroad.com
258 1bbl
Horsepower (gross) 150@3800
Torque (gross) 240@1800
360 2bbl (most common probably)
Horsepower (net) 175@4000
Torque (net) 285@2400
360 4bbl
Horsepower (net) 195@4400
Torque (net) 295@2900
401 4bbl
Horsepower (net) 215@4400
Torque (net) 320@2800
The 258 has fewer moving parts, it's extremely smooth, good torque at a lower rpm for getting a heavy truck moving and a 1bbl carb to sip gas.
Try cliffordperformance.com (http://cliffordperformance.com) and make an educated choice.
Is there a reference which plots the hp/torque curves for these motors? ...one which imposses the plot curves over another in different colors/ symbols?
I'm guessing that for idleing about on old hunting roads/trails, there is a lot of torque between 1600 - 2000 rpm with better throttle responce and gas mileage from the 258... especially if you have a manual transmission setup.
Of course, xfer case, gearing, and tire size affect desired usage and driveability too...
Drivir8, What's your intended usage? I believe someone had a thread on the effort/ conversion cost of a 6 cyl "upgrade". :D tongue.gif :D

Oh boy, the 6cyl vs. 8cyl debate
Drivir8, I have tried to follow your other posts and the best thing is to find another 360.
That will save some aggrevation and hassle because it's a straight swap unlike the 258.
this is also an ease of swapping debate. switching to a 6cyl will cause MAJOR headaches. i believe the trans will have to be relocated about 8 inches, along with a whole slew of other problems. find a nice 360 or 401 and just swap it in. AND...there is a HUGE difference between the 360 and 401........but the 258 rocks Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley. it's a beast...but not quite enough for a FSJ.

ok...this is exactly the kinda stuff I wanna know! I got a really great looking wag in superb condition now I just need to replace that bad engine and get it on the road. We live in Northern Va. so we get ice and sometimes snow so we want something to get around in during the winter. Our sports car just don't cut it in ice and snow... or dirt roads... or big bumps... and for the 3 of use to take a long trip in the car is not all that comfy... so the wag would be great for traveling in comfort. I do NOT want major headacks so it looks like the 258 is out. The good news is I am not in a rush to do anything. I can wait and look and find a great deal on either another 360 or MAYBE a 401... I am leaning heavely tward the 360 just because this will be my first time doing anything this major to a car so I don't want it to be TOO hard! smile.gif I just thought as long as I was researching the options I would ask about the 258... and a nice guy here has one not TOO far away and it only has about 40K on it... that's why I was asking.. but it sounds like way more than I wanna deal with.
So thats the story! I am going to just keep looking for either an engine or a wag with an engine I can use and then part out... so keep an eye open, I might have something you need in the next few months... :D

You'll probably gain a couple of MPG with a 258, but is it worth the effort?
If you don't want major headaches then replacing a blown V8 with a new or rebuilt V8 is the way to go. I will say that my 401 with a dead or near dead cylinder runs dang good.
