I have a 1979 Cherokee with 360/TH400/1339 and locking hubs. That I know for sure. I don't need to engage the glove box knob to engage 4x4, I simply lock hubs. Now for the stupid question: Do I have the Part time Kit? Or can I just have after market hubs without the PO installing a P/T kit? I can't figure it out.

You could have hubs and no part time kit. However, I would doubt it. How do you know that you are in 4 wheel drive when you engage the hubs, and not the glove box knob?
If you do not have a part time kit, the front shaft should still rotate, even if the hubs are not locked in. If you have a part time kit, the front shaft won't turn if everything is working properly. If you then lock in the hubs, the driveshaft will turn, put only because the front wheels are turning it, not because it is recieving power from the T/case.
Make sure your vacume lines to the T/case are good, and hooked up properly.

I have not checked the 4x4 on jacks yet, only off road. I didn't even know about the knob until last weekend. I will put the jeep on stands and check out the front axle in 2x with the hubs disengaged and the knob in off position (after checking vacuum lines). If the front axle turns, then no part time kit right. I already know that the 4x4 is engaged without the knob i the engaged position, could that be a vacuum leak? I definitly have vacuum lines still attached to the knob and they traced to the case. Thanks for the help.

If the Jeep moves without the hubs locked either you have a pt kit or you're stuck in e-drive.

The truck moves without the hubs locked, but I don't know about the front shaft. But I will check it out this weekend. Any idea about the vacuum lines to the case? Does a vacuum leak result in automatic locking of case? or inability to engage case with gove box knob??? Any input is sincerly welcomed!!!

I've got the MM part time kit as well. In order to engage 4wd, I have to lock hubs and turn the glove box switch............phil

MAYBE YOUR LINES ARE SWITCHED?

Loss of vaccum will typically mean the xfer case is "stuck" in it's last position. You won't be able to switch it back and forth without vaccum.

Do this after you have established you have good vaccum at the switch (or you could run two vac lines directly to the diaphram and suck on them)...

Hubs unlocked, knob for transfer case shifted to normal mode (not e-drive). Go about 2 mph, have a buddy look to see if the front driveshaft is moving. If it's not, you probably have the part time kit.

There are two other possibilities if the front drive shaft doesn't move. 1) The lines are hooked up wrong and you are in e-drive 2) You have no vaccum and you are stuck in e-drive

I wouldn't be too suprised if the PO installed the hubs and not the PT kit, it wouldn't be the first time it's happened, that's for sho!

Thanks guys, you just saved me week of worry and a weekend of work!! I will post when I get it all figured out this weekend. I have a feeling that I am stuck in e-drive and that is why the knob doesn't have to be engaged for me run 4x4. Thanks again....
