First off, thanks everybody for helping me with my ongoing list of tuning problems. I actually got my dipstick tube installed and stopped from leaking and I got my choke working. So, now I bring to the genius of this board a new query.

'85 G-Wag. New 360 (1000 miles). MSD Ignition. Timing is set at 16 deg BTDC
Edelbrock 1405 w/ electric choke. IMS are set at 3/4 of a turn out each.

Cold (32 deg F) go out to start Jeep. Press pedal once to floor, then hold 1/2" depressed. Jeep revs and instantly dies. I then have to pump furiously and alternately crank the motor for 30-40 seconds before it sputters to life. I then have to hold it on throttle until it warms for a minute or so before it will stay running. From then on, it is smooth sailing.

How do I get it to start and run like a champ?

Thanks in advance
Phil

Sounds to me like you may have a bad vacuume in the emissions stuff (I know, ugh). But another thing sticks out to me, isn't your ignition set back just a little too far? I thought 12btdc was standard? I don't know the alt where you are, though. Timing set too far back can cause hard start probs, esp when cold. One thing that worked for me on my 84 (once I got MOST of the bugs worked out) was to push gas once (only on first start), start engine, then feather it after it started if it felt like it was going to chug out on me. Hope it helps.

Sounds to me like your choke setting is still too lean, try going richer two notches at a time to see if it improves.

On my jeep its been cold here lately (20's) i tap the gas half way, turn it over kits up and runs for a second then dies. hit the gas half way then kick over and it starts up and the high idlle camm kicks in so that it idles at 1000rpm's.

1: sounds like your high idle cam isnt working right.

2: sounds like your choke is set to lean. To adjust the mixture when cold..one morning when its cold..go out pop the hood, remove air cleaner. The choke should be almost closed all the way. Just open a tiny bit. If it isnt...adjust it so that it is. In order for the high idle cam to kick in...the choke has to be closed to a certain point. Then as your truck warms up...the choke warms up and will open it. It will then release the high idle after you hit the gas once it is warmed up.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Brown Bear: I removed all of the emissions stuff, including the cats. Yes, I think my timing is set too high. I will back it to 12 deg BTDC.

Fitzworld: I thought since it tried to start my choke was set rich enough, but I will try going a couple nothces richer and see how it does.

Stuka: My high idle is engaging, but for some reason it won't spool up to high idle until it has run for a minute or so. I describe it as a chunky idle. It doesn't miss or run rough when warm, maybe that is my timing prob though.

Well, I will check my choke adjustment, bump it a couple of nothces richer and back my timing off to 12 deg BTDC and see what happens.

Thanks guys!
Phil
