All of a sudden it sounds like my trans (TH400) is whining. Maybe just at low speeds, of course who could here it at high speeds. Or maybe it is the X-case (needs a rebuild due to chain slip). Need some advice on whats going on.

BY THE WAY THEY ARE SALTING THE ROADS HERE!!!NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO  :(

My 87 does the same thing. I would suspect the tranny. It probably does it when it is down shifting to first correct? Or when taking off. Other than that you probably do not here it. That is what mine does.

Yikes......It has been freezing rain here since yesterday evening... Currently we are @ 33 deg and dropping by mid morning with Ice all day. We will see how that works North Texas weather changes all the time. Stay Warm....It is cold out there.

there's a bushing between the planetary gearset and the drum, this is the most likely cause, this of course involves rebuilding the trans and of course the longer you wait the more it'll cost, "soft" parts ( gaskets, bushings, etc. ) cost less than "hard" parts ( gears, drums, etc. ) i've built quite a few 400's over the years but i could be wrong hope this helps good luck

You may not believe this jeepbob, but I KNEW someone was going to say that. My money was on 64trvlr though. Ha Ha. You guys never miss a chance. Michael and Roguestar: is there any chance it might be the X-case it needs rebuilding (chain slippage every now and then)?

How bad is the whine? Mine does it too but I am positive mine is the tranny. Mine overshifts also. I added a additive to my tranny the last change and it went away for a while. Now it is doing it again. My clutch slips on hard acceleration and steep grades also. So that is my culperate. What does the t-case sound like when the chain slips.

The X-case makes a thump-thump-thump when I accelerate HARD. It only started since I got the rebuild (LOT more horse with the upgrades). Guys on this site told me the chain was slipping. I just had my trans gone completely through; all seals replaced, new pump, and new bushings etc.... about 2 years ago, so It shouldnt be the trans. But with the way my luck is going it probably is. Also a friend told me the rear end might be the culprit. I'm going to the shop Tuesday and try and find out for sure.
