What should I use to clean out the water passages on a used Aluminum intake? I was thinking about some CLR or something along those lines or do I need something else?
What do you call the bolts that just block off some of the passages on the intake? Do these need to be removed and replaced when cleaning?

Probably something like oxalic acid, and shouldn't have any effect on the whitish aluminum corrosion. You can dip in carb cleaner like Stuka mentioned ... 2.5 gal is about $40 at NAPA; that's probably enough to immerse if you have a pan the right shape. Hazardous to transfer it from container to container though; heed the warnings.

Don't take out the plugs in the water passages unless you have to. If you strip one out you'll kick yourself.

A radiator shop may be able to clean it for you a lot easier.

You can probably find an engine rebuilder who will hot tank it for you (boil in caustic solvents) for a nominal price.

My shop charged me $25 to hot-tank my intake, well worth it in my mind.
