I have searched numerous topics, and consulted the factory TSM for 79. The double cardan joint on my 79 cherokee decided it was about time to give me some trouble. I tried to get the old one apart but it is still together. I can change regular u-joints w/out any trouble. Have done this many times. Just never did the double ones. I am not sure if there is any detailed write up on it anywhere, I was unable to locate anything. Thank you in advance
Craig
If you've got the 79 TSM the write-up on page 2E-11 is about as detailed as it can get.

The double cardan looks imposing, but it's just two U-joints with a seal and bushing between them. I got a kit from NAPA. The hard part is getting at the driveshaft bolts on the transfer case.

Thanks joe, I turned to that page and seems to be pretty informative, I work better w/ pictures but between that and the diagram on a few pages before that I think I will be able to do it.
Carrotman: Believe me when I say that it was a PITA to get those bolts out. Involved removing the crossmember and everything. If I have any other problems I will post back w/ them

I usually see the driveshaft shop get the double cardan joint. Maybe give a call to your local shop to see what they'd charge before you attempt it - maybe it's not worth your aggrivation.

I agree with the Anti-Chrysler. Take the shaft to a shop for the rehab of the front shaft. Cost me about $80 for new u-joints, centering bearing (borg-warner parts), and balance. Used to have driveline vibes, now it's smooth as glass up front.

I'm all for saving money and doing it myself, but at times, it's best to leave it to those with the right equipment.... just my opinion. smile.gif

It has been about 3 or 4 years since I had this done so the price may be a little higher now. Keep a good eye on the shaft and lube everything once a month. Joints still feel tight and no unusual noises.
