View Full Version : Rebuild tranny?
I've been trying to do the work on my 86 GW myself. I swapped in a replacement Dana 44 rear a few months back, replaced the timing chain last year, etc., etc. So I can pretty much follow directions and do some things on my own. I think my 727 tranny is shot and was wondering how tough it is going to be to swap out? How about rebuilding? Never touched a tranny before and need some advice here. What do you think it would cost to have someone do the work locally? And anyone have a good replacement in the Minneapolis area, by the way?

I beleive Gsmikie is making or already has made a 727 rebuild video for them. From what I hear they're very easy to follow.

gsmikie, if it's anything like your GM tranny rebuild video, for gosh sake wear a less colorful, less blinding shirt! (Watched it at grimgaunt's house Sunday morning.)
for gosh sake wear a less colorful, less blinding shirt!like the deer hunter who wears camo...the shrimp hunters must wear these shirts. they say the shrimp can't see mikie coming!

The tranny just went out on my 87 GW. Much easier to just swap them out then bother rebuilding. If you rebuild you have to be extremely careful about not getting dirt inside the tranny.

Dan,I have a 727 tranny I will gladly get rid of about 100 bucks or so. Not sure how well it works though. let me know if you are interested and we can discuss it further
Thanks. I've got someone in a local Jeep club who may have one. I think shipping would be pretty costly. Besides, I would really need to be sure that I'm getting one in very good shape, as I really don't want to do this again soon! Since I posted this, my wheel bearings are needing immediate replacement, so I am going to concentrate on getting that done first....why do I like this beast so much again?
