View Full Version : fairly stupid fuel injection question

Some projects I say I want to do and other projects I know I'm going to do. After doing the research, I think fuel injection will give me the security I need for longer-distance driving. I've read all the threads here. I know the costs.
That being said, here's my question:
Doesn't the role of the carb radically change after fuel injection? I mean, it's just functioning as a pure intake at this point and really not controlling the things it used to, right? It's utility seems greatly diminished. And if that's true, what does that mean?
Real curious, Brent

The carb is removed altogether. Its either replaced by a throttlebody style injection system or a port injection system with a different kind of throttle body that basically just regulates the air intake.

No carb needed or wanted.

Did I mention it was cursory research? So the intake manifold is where all the action is?

you'll have a throttle body (butterflies and such) even w/EFI, it just doesnt have the fuel bowl and needle inlets.
Go to http://www.msefi.com and read their FAQ for a general intro to EFI basics

Well, if you are using a throttlebody style injection system the throttlebody injector looks a lot like a carb and functions in a similar way. It would handle both, the air flow and the gas injection.

On a port injection system gas injection and air flow regulation are separated functions. The gas is injected way downstream from the carb monting flange (very near the ports in the head). So all you need then is an air flow regulator where the carb used to be, just a throttle butterfly plate and airhorn basically.
