OK Put in new alternator, check all my connections, and it still cuts off if I remove a battery wire. There is no movement on my amp gauge either. I also replaced the coil. What else could be the prob?

Ignition module.

I'm sure Kimbrough meant to say voltage regulator.

Ignition module would prevent your coil from firing.

Voltage regulator tells alt to deliver current to the system.

i have the almost the same problem. i replaced the alternator (went to 55 amp instead of 40). than replaced the voltage regulator. i didnt have a diagram or anything so i had to guess how the wires went back. i know i should've payed attention. Now it overcharges the battery. could it be the battery or or something else?

Jeep69, how many volts are you talking about when you say "overcharging"? A good battery can handle a charge anwhere fron 10.5 VDC to 16.5 VDC without concern of damage or premature wear to the battery. My system currently runs at around 15 VDC. Everything is fine. You just have to include checking the level of water in you battery as part of your regular maintenance. It will evaporate out slowly even if you aren;t charging the battery on a regular basis. You should check the level monthly and more often if you suspect a problem.

In a 69 Gladiator, I suspect you have an ammeter. The needle should almost always be just a bit to the right of center when the vehicle is running.

Here's a good way to check your actual system charge rate.

Start it up, remove the neg battery lead, measure the votlage across the neg & pos leads. Anything below 16.5 and you're fine. Subtract about 5% from this number and you have a close estimate of what your battery will actually see in terms of charging voltage.

Another thing you can do is just simply measure across the battery after you've had the Jeep running for about an hour. This will also tell you your charge rate.

Good Luck
