Todd or anyone who has had bad front carrier bearings:

Can you run through the symptoms you experienced? I have some "symptoms" that I want to compare against your experiences.

I'll try my best....

I noticed it wasn't a 'constant' rythmic pattern... meaning sometimes is was there and very quiet... as it warmed up, it would get louder and vibes or rumbling would start and the warmer it got, the more constant it became... more like a howling. If I let of the gas and got on it hard ( like a punch) it would go away until I let off the throttle and rolled back into it again.

It was very deceiving... I was told U-joints.. I changed them... no change... out-of-balance shaft...checked it...nope.

Worn ring and pinion was suggested, but that would be constant... but I checked it anyway... luckily I ripped out the shafts to find it...when I remove the caps, the carrier literally fell in my lap! The cage on the bearings were WAY LOOSE and had too much play.

I hope this helps narrow your problem... these things can get annoying while your on the wild goose chase.

Thanks Todd. It's something that just started and I haven't really been able to isolate yet, what with my springs popping from worn bushings and all. Is there another way of checking those bearings short of taking the whole thing apart??

First the bushings, then I'll have the driveshafts, U-joints and Cardan checked, so at least I can check those off the list. Kind of funny, the vibes seem to come and go with no discernable pattern.

Todd, never mind about the disassembly question. I read your other post. Wow, must be a run on those darned bearings.

Both of my folk's GWag's - '84 and '89 - have had to have the pinion bearings replaced in the last couple of years.
