View Full Version : Need Oil Pump Rebuild Help
Ok maybe Im just stupid but anyway I took my oil pump cover off, removed the 2 gears. I did not see a the spring and pressure relief valve they could have fallen out and rolled down the driveway before I noticed, but anyway does anyone have a pic of how the new spring and relief valve go in? does the valve point into the housing or the cover?

I believe there is a bolt on the outside of the housing. This is what holds the spring and relief valve in place. Just unscrew that bolt and the spring and valve will come out. It will be under a little pressure, but not enough that it will go flying out when you remove the bolt. Don't have a picture though, I'm just going by memory (did mine a couple years ago).
ok it all makes sense now. This is the first amc v8 i have ever taken apart. The oil pump sure is easier to fix then one in a sbc.....thanks

The clearance between the gears and the oil pump cover are very important. Try to stay on the tight side of the spec. Too loose and you loose pressure.

You'll want to pack it full of petroium jelly too when you put it back together. I'll prime a lot quicker.

Good point Joe, I forgot to mention that part. (packing gears with petroleum jelly) I found out the hard way. Mine would not prime at all until I took it apart and packed it with vaseline.

Check here in the tech section. OIL Pump Mods (http://www.ifsja.org/tech/motors/pumpmod.shtml)
There is a little write up on it. Since your measuring how high the gears are above the housing the larger # (.006-.007) is the ideal. Just use the stock gasket on the cover. No sealer!

Since everyone is contributing their 2 cents, make sure to check the surface of the backing plate. If their is any wear on it at all, I would suggest to have it machined or replaced. It can make a big difference in pressure.
