I am planning on painting my (burgundy) Wagoneer with the black Durabak this summer. My paint is faded and has the typical hood and roof problems. The thing I am trying to figure out is:

A) SHOULD I paint the chrome trim etc since I also intend to go with custom bumpers that are not chrome.

B) IF I paint the chrome, will the Durabak adhere to it? IF not, what kind of paint would or is there something I can do to make paint stick to the chrome?

I am thinking of completely "blacking" out the truck except for the "turbine" wheels which would be polished and paint the colored portions black too. Then with tinted windows this rig would be intimidating! Hehehehe.

Any ideas, solutions?

BTW, really wanted to go BLUE, but the interior is also maroon, and would be major PIA to change, so I am now leaning toward the black!

THIS I CAN TELL YOU ABOUT PAINTING CHROME THAT WORKS!!!.... ...SAND BLAST THE CHROME BUMPERS THEN YOU WOULD EPOXY THEM..THEN YOU WOULD PAINT THEM WITH AUTOMOTIVE PAINT....JUST LIKE YOU WOULD PAINT YOUR FSJ WITH........ ..."AUTOMOTIVE PAINT"............  tongue.gif  smile.gif

PP HI!! I THINK OF EPOXY AS PRIMER-SEALER..BUT IT IS A PRIMER BUT!!! NOT LIKE A NORMAL PRIMER.. YOU THINK OF...EPOXY IS A TWO PART PRIMER...PRIMER+ACTIVATOR... .........USED OVER OLD PAINT,BARE STEEL,GALVANIZED,ALUMINUM,FIBERGLASS...CLEAN AND SANDED........... ...BUT IT MUST BE TOPCOATED WITH IN THREE DAYS...OR YOU HAVE TO SAND IT THEN RECOAT AGAIN........ ...AFTER YOU SPRAY IT ON AND IT DRYS, YOU DON'T SAND IT,YOU JUST TOPCOAT IT WITH COLOR....BUT YOU CAN REMOVE NIBS { SMALL DIRT AND DUST } WITH A SCUFF PAD!!!....... ....MY TWO CENTS smile.gif smile.gif

i hope you plan on useing your a/c. if you use black you will be building an insulated oven. you may want to think about another color like gray, that would go fairly well with your interior and woulden't make things so hot. and paint your crome and bumpers black for accent. just my thoughts on the subject.

ok, my idea for chrome, as opposed to painting it , remove it, or at least what you can, outer door window trim is all removeable windshield gasket trim, wind-wing frame- NOT! these as well as some trim on the back of the wag or in grill I would maybe sand down and prime/paint them to match.

as for black......hm, I think, maybe.... HotOwieDon'tTouchItDon'tSitInItOuchOuchOuch...
Made myself clear? Personally,I like the gun metal grey that GMC is using on their trucks, I just like the look of non polished steel, even though it isnt bare steel, it looks kinda like it. -Matt

Matt,,,, ROFLMAO~! I had thought of the heat issue, but wasn't sure how hot the summers get here. The gray has some appeal! I thought of white too, but then there is Todd's already that color.

Gary, as for the bumpers, I am planning on building custom tube steel (2x4 square) to replace my chrome ones anyway. I was mainly thinking of all the window trim. My grille is already peeling, so working on ideas for that to be black anyway.

Sandman, I kinda like the gray too~! Too bad my interior wouldn't go well with the blue! SIGH. Guess I could always recolor the interior too, but that is a LOT of work!

PS, I tried to reply to these earlier, but hard to do when giving a bottle to a 4mth old daughter who wants to "help" hold the bottle! Too darn cute for my good!

Speaaking of grills, I really would like if there was an aftermarket grill (aluminum verticals across) has anyone seen anything like this or do I have to fabricate my own like almost everything else on this bad boy?

My 88 GW is black exterior with burgundy interior and I have had no real problems with it being hot. In fact while living in TX for nearly 6 years I seldom ever used the A/C :D :D That flow-thru ventilation from driving with the back window down was great smile.gif

Gladi8tr, I think what I will do, since it will most likely be sometime this summer anyway, is wait until a hot day and find a truck with the spray in bedliner and just "feel" how hot their bed is. Is yours durabak'd or standard paint black? that might make a lot of difference.

I concur with Matt, remove the chrome. I painted mine OD and after many attempts, finally just removed it. My bumpers were a different story. I was going to durabak them but my wife got this stuff from Autozone called BOND-AID. I tried it and so far(2 months)the paint is still sticking to it. Don't now how durabak will stick to it, but it works with paint most excellent.
One thing to think about, you need to make sure you want to remove it because its almost impossible to get it off with mangelling at least some of it.

Mine is plain black automotive paint, but can't imagine there be that much difference
