View Full Version : 5-speed in an 82?

I'm looking to buy another FS Cherokee. One of the Autotrader ads I called about is reported to have a 5-speed installed from the factory. I've never heard of a 5-speed in a FSJ. It's in an '82, wide track, 6 cyl.

Any info on this, including any documentation leads proving or disproving the existance of such an option would be appreciated.

Brad, the T-5 trans was only offered in 1982 and 83 FSJ's and only behind the six cyl motor. It's 4 spd w/OD as 5th gear.
It's a "light duty" trans which seems to hold up marginally well behind a six if driven with care but is really best suited for a 4 cyl motor and for a lighter vehicle. I have one in a CJ and it works ok with the four banger motor but when it does die it'll get replaced with something stronger.
IMHO it's way to weak of a trans for the size and weight of a FSJ.

Thanks Joe. I was afraid of that. I'm not crazy about having to worry about the strength of the drivetrain. I am more interested in finding an 8 with an automatic (like my lsat Cherokee) and this info all but kills interest in this one. Oh well, I still have several other leads.

Brad, I didn't mean to put you off on the Chero. I guess it depends on what you want to do with it and what shape the rest of the Chero is in. I personally like the 258 in a Wag or Chero but prefer the 360 in a truck. If the rest of the Chero is clean and in good shape I wouldn't let the T-5 keep me from it but I would sort of keep thinking that a trans swap will be someday in the future. It wouldn't take much to later swap in a T-176 or even a TF727 auto.

Naw, I put myself off more than your info. I kinda had it in my mind to get another V-8 when I started looking and didn't know anything about the 5-speeds. If there's any weakness at all, I'd rather keep looking. I need to be able to pull a horse trailer, boat and occasionally the errant 18-wheeler (ha) and don't want to be limited from the day of sale.

My 79 (still listed in the reader's rigs section) was rock solid. But alas it was rusty and I thought I wanted a 92 Ramcharger instead. Well, we all do dumb things I guess.

OTOH, the 258/T-5 (it's a Borg Warner 5-spd in there) combo will give you 20mpg+ on the highway; swap in a 4.0L w/EFI, and you can probably better that mileage still.

That's a thought Barry. Drive thrifty until I can find the 401 and get a TH400 regutted with a 700R4. Hmmmm.

Can an early T5 be upgraded with "World-Class" guts?

IowaBrad,

Pardon my stupidity, but can a T400 be regutted with a 700R4?

I don't think(?) so Jason. Not sure though. I think the cases are different too but that's not to say a fist full of money
and a good machinist can't rework one to fit the WC guts. Either way you go the T5 WC is a spendy route and though it's a tough trans it has a lousy first gear ratio for a 4x4. It's a great trans for the hot rod street Mustangs etc but in a 4x4 you'd get a lot better bang for the buck going with something else.

I've never seen it done, but I seem to recall reading about it in JP or another 4X4 magazine. I was told the overdrive workings of the GMs are internal, unlike Mopar's bolt on units. I'll recheck, although it was just a thought.

Actually, I've seen ads and heard anecdotal evidence of 700R4s stuffed in TH400 casings...I can't remember the company either, but supposedly it's a direct drop-in replacement with no driveshaft swapping required. Don't ask me how, cuz I dunno.

bignblue,

Wow, I am interested in knowing more. If you run across any more info please pass it on.

Thanks.

i too would be extrememly interested in an overdrive for my wag, but here's another thought on it : would a 700r4 behind an adapter plate for a th400 work? i'm probably totally off-base here, but the thought struck me.

Sorry guys the 700 is built on a modified th350 case not a th400.
