View Full Version : Re-arching springs

Since i've got an income now I am planning on doing a SOA on my J-20 at the same time as I swap in the t-18 and d20. I figured that way I can have the driveshafts lengthened and get it all done at once when everything is apart.

Anyways, my J-20 had been used to haul heavy loads. It sits level, but I've had an entire drivetrain (minus axles) with 70 gals of gas in the bed and it barely squats with entirely stock springs. Taking a look at the springs both front and rear they are almost flat. Could I get them re-arched, maybe some new bushings pushed in, for maybe and inch or two of lift and a better ride?

I know Rusty Jeep knows of a spring shop, any ideas Ben?

I think they would probably have to replace most all of the supporting leafs to get the arch back. To put in a 1-2" lift would mean a longer main leaf so that would have to be replaced too. Probably cheaper to buy a new set of springs with a built in 1-2" overstock, at least that's what I'm looking at doing.

Supposedly if you re-arch worn springs then they will settle to their original positional within a year or 2.

I did an add-a-leaf and a re-arch on the 84 I had. IMO the re-arch was a waste. I am leaning towards the Skyjacker 4 inch for my 87. If you want to get a little more arch into the springs on the cheap and you don't mind a slightly harsher ride go with the AALs without a re-arch.

As always - your milage may vary :D .

Thanks for the advice. I'll probably just leave them then. I don't really need any more strength as i've had it loaded as much as I ever hope to without problems.

As far as rebuilding the springs, my J-20 only has two or three big fat leaves, so it's not like there is a big pack. I'd like to keep it like that, less springs, less surface area for friction = smoother ride and better articulation.

Well...it has post mounts front and rear, right? You could call the spring shop that I had mine done at, or find one locally. Any good spring shop shoud be able to make what you are looking for. I'd get more thinner leaves, instead of the three huge ones. They actually seem to ride better with a few more thinner leaves. If you want the number and stuff for GR Spring I can dig it up for ya.
