Yesterday when i started up Jeep to go home, I heard what sounded like to me to be loose shield rattling. It did it twice and stopped. This morning when I started it, it did it again only kept it up for 60 seconds. I popped the hood and listened. I think it sounded like it was coming from inside the engine. It was a tinny sound. What inside the engine would sound like that? I have about 40lbs @ 1600rpm and about 15lbs @ idle of oil pressure. Not a lot but it is within specs(i think).
I would love any input you guys and gals can give.
OOHH! I was supposedly rebuilt about 35,000 miles ago. Before I bought it. I haven't been able to get ahold of the builder and find out what was done.

My wife will NOT BE A HAPPY CAMPER if I have to rebuild it again. She just doesn't understand.

How about the inspection plate where the starter mounts? If it's loose, it'll make a loose, rattling, tinny sound.

I suppose it sounds more like taking a ball peen hammer and hitting a piece of steel. Like i say, it quits shortly after start up(about 10 seconds now) and then the engine sounds the same as it has since I bought it. Runs the same. I'm wondering about a bolt hitting somewhere but that doesn't explain why it quits. maybe broken push rod?
I don't know.

Well, no matter what is making the noise, it no doubt quits because the engine gets warm. When the metals get hot and expand a bit I think it would hide the noise.

Maybe it's a bearing going? Really can't tell you, but it's not a pushrod, cause the truck is still running "the same" as before the noise.

Hello from a fellow Iowan. I remember when I had the Oil pan off of my 79 Cherokee to swap out the rod and main bearings. I had to move the oil pick-up tube several times to get at/torque the caps back down. Before the pan went back on, I noticed the pick-up tibe would move from side to side quite easily. Fearing a suction leak that would lesad to pump starvation, I wrapped the tube threads in teflon tape. The tube still moved a bit, but I put the pan up anyway. Oil pressure went from, well, red light at idle, to 40+.

From day one, I would hear a slight, tinny "plinking" from the oil pan. It wa sdefinately NOT rod knock. After a minute or two, or sometimes less, the sound would go away, not to return until the following morning, or "cold" start. I still believe it was the pick-up tube tapping against the side of the pan.

If it's not making expensive noises, keep an ear on it, but I wouldn't worry.

Well, IowaBrad, I have a bad feeling that is an expensive sound. Especially when it started all of a sudden. I'm having my neighbor look at it today. He has a mechanic shop. I should find out something when I get home. GOT MY FINGERS CROSSED!!
HEY its nice to find IFSJer's close to home.

If it goes away after a short while, I could be the lifters pumping up. If they leak down, and there's extra clearance in the valvetrain, and you have somewhat-weak oil pressure, there will be extra valvetrain clearance producing that noise until the lifters pump up.

That's just one possibility.

Well, got it figured out. BOY DO I FEEL LIKE A BONEHEAD!!. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/redface.gif I just put my rad back in after it developed a hole from the shroud. I also put new rubber tranny cooler lines on it. well when i put the line to the rad from the tranny on the drivers side, I left the hose a little long. I've had the rad in and have been driving it for a couple of weeks now with no problem. Turns out that the hose had rotated itself up and was hitting the fan when it was cold. after the engine started it would either soften enough or twist just out of reach of the fan blade. WELL IT IS FIXED NOW.

Thanks to all of your ideas. I was thinking the worst. Probably cause I'd have to justify it to my wife.(she hates JEEP)
