I've got a 78' J-20 with 360/T-18a/44 front /60 rear- but I dont know which X-case I have. I have manual locking hubs.2wd is way forward and 4wd is back toward the seat.It doesnt feel like any other selections other than all the way forward or all the way back.I havnt messed with it a great deal..What X-case is this? The rubber boot is gone so that might have something to do with it feeling funny. Also this rig has the offset axle in the rear(sits of to the passenger side)if that means anything. Thanks,
-James

You have a D20. The shift pattern is in a "U" shape. I can't really remember the patternsince it has been so long since I have run a Jeep D20. Someone else will jump on I am sure.

PC's right, it's a D20, with a U-shaped pattern. All the way forward, and to the left is 2WD, all the way back and to the left is 4Hi, all the way back and to the right is basically neutral, and forward and to the right is 4Lo.

You need to be aware, that you need to exersize the lo range occasionally, or it'll be difficult to shift into low range. Also, don't be surprised if you have to drive in reverse for several feet to get out of 4wd, because of binding.

The D20 is a strong, gear driven case, and with a little attention will give years of service. You've got a few options as far as improving the low range of 2.03 goes. You can swap in the gears from a D18, or a Scout/Bronco D20, and get a 2.46 ratio, or Tera-Lo has a 3.15:1 kit that you can install, but it's a little steep at $750.
