View Full Version : What would you bring?

This is a hypothetical question, but it is something I've been considering for the last ten years and hope to actually attempt someday, so keep in mind a human budget.

Let's say that you wanted to drive your Jeep accross the Pan American Highway, all the way down to tierra del Fuego in South America from Anchorage Alaska. You know that parts might be scarce in some of these areas, so you intend to bring some with you in case you break down. However, all the parts you bring need to fit in a 4' X 1' X 1' container which you will store in your camper trailer. This does not need to contain fluids (oil, antifreeze etc.) which can go in another similar sized case along with tools.

What spare auto parts would you definately include?

The third case (roughly same size) would be filled with extrication equipment, what would you put in it?

PS The cases have not been purchased, but they would have to be close to that size in order to allow space for all the other gear this "expedition" would require, so if you think of something that is 14 inches include it on the list!

Toilet paper, Check!

What is Mechanics wire?

BTW, I was thinking along the lines of "spare alternator, water pump, brake shoes" etc.

Underhood welder would be a must if you will be doing some hard wheeling. You would be suprised what you can fix(temporary of coarse)with an onboard welder.

The Australia and New Zealand FSJ page has their twist on this topic, under the same notion of extreme temps, scarce parts, long journey, etc.

They did forget to mention TP. Maybe they just rip off a piece of sagging headliner....

SPARE Q-TRAC.
I drove Los Angeles to Seattle and El Paso and back twice and two trips to Mexico City in my 68 chevy truck.
Heres what broke.
U joints (carry lots of these, trust me).
front wheel bearings.
Fan clutch.
Radiator (piece of muffler pipe was kicked up by the car in front and speared it in the middle)or learn to braze stuff.
flywheel/flex plate, a local shop can install it but good luck getting one so take a spare..
Spare front drive shaft so when your u joint goes out and mashes the shaft. Duct tape it to the frame to save space or put it in your tailgate.
Toilet paper, lots of it.
Hide spare keys all over in frame some place.
power steering hoses.
Make sure you wiper fluid squirters work.
FIRE EXTINGUSHERS.
SOME FUEL FILTERS. I put like seven INLINE and when it would clog I would throw out the first one and just put a longer hose. the gas ther in terrible.
JB WELD, Epoxies, SILICONE.
Oh two of the trips were to rescue friends one blew the rear end and the other engine fire.

Oh yea guns are illigal so bring some big Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley hunting (er, cooking) knifes.
Alka seltzer, pepto Bismo, tylenal, leaches....

Cool list fellas. There's stuff on there I woulda never thought of. I like the idea of duct taping a drive shaft INSIDE the rear tail gate.

I'll definately save this list. I'm planning to drive from Cincinnati to Alaska in two years. If I do that successfully, South America will happen within three years after that, although I'm not sure how I'd get back, or how I could finance South America. Alaska I just about have figured out.

If I'm going to have HALF this stuff by then, I'll have to start collecting it now.

BTW, I intend to carry a LOT of aerial flares (since guns ARE illegal). I've used them to scare off bears in the past.

im with jeep freak.youd be surprised at what silly stuff you can do as a temp fix to get yourself home if youve got a welder.anything from patching a cracked frame,to welding your favorite big wrench across the 2 halves of your broken tie rod or drag link.you can even weld the u joint caps right to the yoke in case of violent u joint/yoke destruction.

if youve got on board air to power a pneumatic cut off wheel and drill, the silly stuff that you could do to get yourself back home is virtually unlimited!especially if ya carry some spare tube steel, and other metal...

you can rig alot of stuff with chain and wratchet straps, too. ive actually heard of people rigging their steering linkage with chain(tho i think that one should only be used to get you to the road, not all the way home).a friend of mine actually drove all the way home from haspin acres back to dayton(about 70 miles) with wratchet straps holding his xfer case onto the tranny, after the axle twisted(loose u bolts),collapsed the front drivehaft and pushed the xfer off the tranny, chewing up gears, and stripping all the bolt holes/threads.

just last weekend i used one of the several coat hangers i carry to hold up whats left of my exhaust.you can fix alot of stuff with coat hangers http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/smile.gif

also wire ties,or zip ties, whatever you wanna call em.we used lots of those to keep a battery in place one time when the hold down broke, and i used one to keep one of my lift spacers in place on another part of the frame when the mount rusted thru and the back corner of the body collapsed onto the frame. sadly enough, zip ties make for a permanent solution to alot of things on my rig-for example, holding the electric fan in place...

last and not least-lots of radaiator clamps in various sizes.ive seen people fixe clutch linkage, motor mounts, and even hold steering boxes to the frame with radiator clamps.

stick with me-i am the king of rig it good enough to get home fixes.i can rebuild my carb with a couple of rocks and a big stick,if i have to... one time i drove home with one of my socks stuffed in my oil pan after a rock punctured it,and it was leavin a little trail telling others where id been.that was prolly one of the most creative ones ive ever done.

one last thot, its come in handy a couple of times to have a small propane torche and some solder to fix radiator holes.

Cool Scotty!

I think I'm going to do the welder thing. Makes sense that you could rig a lot of homemade parts that way. I'll have to learn to use it though. I had a friend do some welding for me a while back, so I have some ideas on how it works, but I don't even know what to look for in a "portable" welder. I'm planning on having the smallest generator and compressor I can bring and stashing them somewhere in the trailer. I'll have to add tiny welder to the story. If I knew how to build a bumper like yours, I'd get a compressor motor and stick it in the spare tire area, or even inside the car in the rear jack compartment. I think I'd want the AC for some of the hotter climates.

I wonder if I can buy a combo Generator/Welder?

Theres no reason you couldnt have onboard air and a welder.. There is a good site on the web where a guy has two yorks side by side.. one does his AC and the other is for onboard air.. ,, then ya lose that stupid oxy pump and put a welder alternator right there..

American Express card... and a couple extra shock absorbers.

Several years ago I read a story, which I think was originally written in the late fifties or early sixties, about a couple who restored a Willys amphibious vehicle and did just what you're talking about. This was essentially a WW2 Jeep with a boat hull built around it, designed for military use but not used much (about 1,000 units made?). At the time the Pan American Highway was just a grand idea. Anyway, they went through lots and lots of shock absorbers...

They also had to ford small sections of the Caribbean Sea at some point, but I'm sure that's changed in 40 yearsand that there's a lot more actual highway than they had then.

If you find the link, lemme know. My airpump is long gone.

Waitaminute . . . what if you need the compressor to work on the motor?
