It seems that my TC is leaking fluid, so the gasket that looks to seperate the front housing and back housing needs to be changed. Do they make this gasket anymore? What is the best way to approach this fix? Will I have to drop the whole TC or can I seperate the rear housing from the front housing? Can anyone refer me to a good Quadra-Trac exploded diagram?

ColeTrickle...I checked out that link prior to posting this thread...I wasn't able to locate a thread that was on the gaskets.

Hmmm...This link has a removal process. I believe you can get away with silicon or some type of sealant.

At least that's what Randy Banton said when he split the case open...

I was able to get a QT gasket set from Specialty Jeep Parts in CA a few years back if you're looking for the complete set.

how much did this set run you? how many gaskets were included?

I don't recall exactly what the set cost but there is a link for them under the links section. It seemed to include everything that was needed in tearing down a QT. All I needed was the paper gasket between the QT and the TH400. I would think that if all you need is the gasket from splitting the case, a bead of silicone would work all right. I can take a look tonight and see if I can find the remainder iof the gasket set.

Use blue RTV. (or "silicone of color" as the Ouray crowd might know it). Just don't go too crazy with it, a thin bead should do it.

jeepguzzi...would black RTV do the trick...I always see fellers use that when they are working on their trannies

You can get the gasket set from a bunch of sources, including JCWhitney. Cost about $38 (last time I paid, not _that_ long ago), comes with transmission tailhousing - to TC gasket, TC front/back halves O-ring, TC-low range unit O-ring, and a bunch of seals. Never hurts to have one sitting on the shelf.

You can replace the front/rear half-case seal without removing the TC, just pull the low range unit first, and then the rear half of TC. I would not recommend using RTV - there's not a whole lot of a surface for it to form a gasket, and the sharp edges of the casting are likely to shear it. Push comes to shove, lay a round bead of RTV (black, red, blue, doesn't matter - it doesn't get very hot) in the "dugout" for the O-ring, in both halves of the case, and hope they squeeze together when you tighten up the bolts.
