As I tried to start my truck this afternoon there was no power anywhere. The lock switch has been having to turn further in order to engage the starter for some time now. So I have diagnosed the lock tumbler rod or the little spring thingy has broken. I have another complete steering column from my 83 donor truck. The 83 is an automatic column with the gear auto selector on the column, and I run a manual in my 82. One question is would it be better and easier to just swap the steering columns rather than replacing the lock and rod in my 82? And will there be any problems by me using an auto column with things like the turn signals and such. Thanks in advance for the help. I just need some feed back on how much is involved in swapping the columns.

I just replaced my ignition switch.Paid CAN$22, I was asked if I had tilt or not.I belive the same switch was used through the 80s.It sounds like the prob is in the switch and not the lock cylinder or rod.It is a pretty easy job,if you got any questions ask away

Sounds like the rack assembly inside the column has give up the ghost. The kit is available at most part stores that carry the Help line of parts. They are the same as chevy. You will have to disassemble the top part of the column to replace the rack, not too hard just time consuming. While there be sure and tighten the four torx screws that hold the bucket to the column.
