Friend of a friend put me onto "a big jeep with an indian head on it". This is what I know:
78 model
4 door
towing package (pulled a travel trailer)
80K miles +/-
stored under cover
one dent in rear fender
1 owner
took it to Chevy dealer who told her it was worth $2-3K
said to make an offer
Don't know what engine or transmission, would guess 8cyl/auto
Am I right in thinking 360 or if I'm lucky 401 w/th400?
What type of transfer case?
What problems should I look for?
I have a 327 powered Kaiser truck so I am ignorant with the AMC stuff.
A little Help please.

That would be a 360 (sorry) with a TH400 and a quadratrac. If it is a manual transmission it will have the Dana 20 Transfer case. Your axles will be D44 Narrow tracs. The indian head is that it has the "S" package which is a trim package (nothing special).

Big Red, I've been told recently by other board members that the BW 1339 was the standard T-case that bolted up to the TH-400 and that the Dana 20 was available for the manual transmission only.
I have the 1339 on mine and it doesn't even say Quadratrac on the trim anywhere. I also have the part time conversion kit and Warn hubs.
I'm not a transfer case expert I'm just passing on what I've been told. The brochure does not distinguish the 1339 or Dana 20 as optional or standard in any case. This is a mystery I'd like to solve with facts but nobody seems to have any concrete evidence of what was bolted up to what and what could be bolted up and all that stuff.
Let me know what you or anybody else can find out in documentation with respect to the T-cases.

I believe the BW1339 is a Quadrtrac, isn't it? Check out the link below for the production numbers.

BW1339 is the QT with lo range... the BW1305 (I think) is the QT without lo range...
All automatic equipped FSJ's from 74 thru 79 had the TH400/QT.

Hey Rb, I think it is the BW1305 is the one without the low range (well according to the #s link in my post). How is the W/T coming?

Still waiting on arrival of my rear flares... weather has been bad which has delayed the removal from the doner's locale. I am being patient... I'm in no hurry....
RB is pretty much stripped of all the running gear right now on jacks in my garage.... it saddens me to see here this way....all the neighbors ask... "WHERE IS IT?!?!?" then I show them and they say...oh man.... :(

The 4 door Chero could come in various forms. 258/360/401 motors, Th400/T-18A/T-15A tannies, BW-QT or D20 x-case.
Most likely it's a 360/Th400/QT Cherokee S truck. Pretty common set up in the 4 doors. The QT may or may not have LO range(it was optional).
