OK, its my buddy's 89 waggy. Driving down the road and the engine cuts off along with all of the dash components, including dash lights, stereo, AC and the like. Headlights still work. Won't turn over. My first guess was the ignition module. Swapped it out to no avail. Fusible link or something? The fact that the dash is out has me at a loss. He said when it happened he thought he smelled something burning. Show me some love fellas.....
TIA

I'd have to agree with gsmikie, or check the terminal at the alternator or somewhere between there and the amp gauge.
BTW, many O' FSJ's have been burned to a crisp because of that amp guage. You might want to bypass the amp guage.

as was brought to my attention, the 89 model has the volt meter, not the ammeter, so that's not the problem.

Amp gauage? thought they did away with that by 86. it might be time to pull the fuse block down and look for crispy wiring.

check also for shorts in wiring going from the starter solinoid to the alt. I had a similar problem when a wire grounded on the inside of the fender while I was driving. I can't remember if my lights stayed on but I lost power in the dash as well as the engine.
