G'day All
I've just registered, I'm from Rotorua in New Zealand (where FSJ's are like rocking horse manure) With a few mates I'm resurrecting a 1980ish J20 flatdeck 4X4. We have installed a 4.0 EFI 32V Lexus V8, lifted it, rebuilt the brakes etc etc, lots stil to do - fit a tip deck, put all the front panels back on and make a bullbar etc etc. I'll put up some pics on webshots sometime soon.

As far as I can tell the rearend is a Dana 60, what oil should we use in this?

I think the rear diff is a trac loc, (there are little clutch packs behind the sidegears) I read that these wear out quickly, are they cheap/easy to replace?

Cheers

Welcome to the forum!

The trac-loc was a factory option, so there is a good chance that you have it. My 81 J10 has 124k on it and the trac-loc still works quite well. Although it depends on the kind of driving. They arent super cheap to replace, most people go and replace them with a better limited slip unit (such as a detroit tru-trac), or a real locker Suck as a detroit locker or a selectable one like the OX locker or ARB).

The rear axle uses standard gear lube, but you need to make sure you use some limited slip differencial additive, otherwise you will get clutch chatter from the limited slip clutches.

We have one other member from down your way, hes in australia though. I know a few guyss who live in new zealand and they all say they have never seen an FSJ. So you definately have a rare truck there.

Cant wait to see the picts!

Welcome Clint.
The axle takes 85w-90 GL-r gear lube but with a (LSD) limited slip differential friction modifier included or you can add a concentrate to the regular 85w-90. Most name brand GL-5 lubes already have it in it though but best to read the label.
The trac-loc clutches are pretty cheap but for hard use they don't last a great while. Have you been to our sister site the ANZAC IFSJA page?
http://home.off-road.com/~ozifsja/
There are a few FSJ's in NZ. Chris Medlicott one of the ANZAC sites partners has one down in Dunedin(spelling?) anyway down on the south island and he knows these rigs well. What he doesn't know his friends down there do. ;)
If the site doesn't have Chris' email drop me a line I should have it.
Rod, the OZ part of the site is also up on these rigs. Lots more FSJ's it seems in OZ than in NZ.
Not to mention lotsa folks here are up on them too smile.gif

sounds like a great project! What trans did you use?

Thanks for the help guys, I'm just off to throw some oil in now, So we can drive it! the boys got the motor going today - I can't wait to hear it (3 1/2" straight pipe!)
We used the original trans, flywheel & clutch (it had a 6 cyl in it) and adapted it up with a thick alloy plate.
I'm looking forward to a surf of the anzac site tomorrow, thanks for the pointer.

Cheers
Clint

I'm shocked that you could install stock FSJ components to a new Japanese V8. Kinda forces me to imagine the possibilities. Sounds like a great project. J20's are an awesome truck as you know.
Welcome aboard. Hope this forum can help you keep your rig running like it does mine. Brent
