Well I was just going to wire my tachometer in, then I decided to rewire the coil then wires started breaking........I was woulndering with the TFI mod. do I need the resistance wire? Also What is the thing by the oil pump with 1 wire coming out the back and two the side? I had some more Q's but I'll leave it at that and get a BEER..Anyone want one?

working backwards...
* The thing with the wires near the oil-filter is actually three things. The one-wire thing is the oil-pressure sender. The two-wire thing is the choke cut-off switch that prevents the choke from operating if there isn't oil-pressure. In between them are brass fittings to screw them into the block and move them out of the way of the oil-filter.
* I believe the resistance wire is retained even with the TFI coil, but don't quote me on that.

just a suggestion. Replace the oil pressure sending unit while you're in there, they tend to leak out of the plug blades at a phenomonal rate. they also make a huge mess on your steering and driveway. Napa sells one that is about an inch shorter and hence is easier to install.

Yes you keep the resistance wire on the TFI upgrade.

I don't think my Jeep had the resistance wire in it when I got it... I just put a ballast resistor on the fender. Advance Auto or any other crappy store will have 'em. I just got one that was the same resistance as the wire was supposed to be. I forget what the value is.

I thought the resistor was the little cylinder that's attached to the coil (about AA battery size), but you guys are talking about a wire. What gives?

Yeah, just to be sociable, but only if you've got an ice cold EMU BITTER ;)

Sitting Bull, the "little cylinder" is actually the condenser (a throw back to points). The "resistance" is built into the wire, almost like a fusible link, but not quite.

Actually the little cylinder on the coil, of electronic ignition models, is a noise suppressor. Disconnect it and then listen to your CB or AM radio.

My question is if you install a 12 volt coil you wouldn't need the resistance wire, wouldn't it impair coil output? What effect also on the starter relay? My '88 is one of those mid-year change overs. It has the Mitsu starter but still uses the starter relay on the fender.

They kept the starter relay; it just no longer jumped the big (+) wire to the starter like the earlier Ford unit.
