Howdy all,
Lost the rear pinion bearing on the way home from work the other night. I'm assuming this as I can rotate the driveshaft with my index finger. Anyway, what's the best way in loosening off that monster yoke nut? Don't have air, so we're talking the old manual way. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks.
A breaker bar(not ratchet), good solid socket, cheater pipe and some good ol'merican grunt. The pinion nut on a D60 is torqued to 260-270 ft-lbs.

put a 36" pipe wrench on the yoke for back up to the frame or under carrage som where and use a braker bar on the nut . but to me if you can spin your drive shaft free of tourque that doesn't sound like a pinion bearing .sounds like bigger problems.

For extra ooomph on that nut, use a pipe-wrench to hold the yoke steady, and use a floor-jack under the breaker-bar handle to pump it up. That's the way I removed a well-rusted spindle nut from my '69 Toronado without air.

Rent or buy an electric 1/2" electric impact wrench. You can usually rent these for about $ 10 to $ 15.00 each day.
I have a DeWalt that works great. If you plan on doing work on your FSJ you will need it. Its a real time and grunt saver.

I would leave the Yolk Nut alone. Pull the Diff cover. I highly doubt you have pinion bearing problems. Being to turn driveshaft while wheels are on the ground and trany in N indicates spider gears are lost. Pull the cover take a look inside. ;)

I am with Crazy on this one. I was trying to figure out how you were able to turn the rear shaft. Can we have more details on the problem. Like di you hear a bang and then it rolled to a stop or it started to make a grinding sound but you were able to make it home?
