View Full Version : What is diff btwn Selctrac & Comandtrac?
I am looking at an 87 waggonneer this afternoon. It looks like the vehicle could have been equipped with either Tcase, going from info in the tech section. How do I tell the difference and what is the difference?
Thanks

should be a tag on the back of the case with the model number.
Selec-trac is a full time case with an internal diff to allow slippage from front to rear so that you can drive in 4WD on hard dry surfaces. it can be shifted into 2WD though.
Command-trac is a part time only case, meaning you can only use 4x4 on loose surfaces.
the Command-trac models don't have a dash mounted shifter for 4WD. the handle on the floor does it all- it will say 2WD,4WD HI, N , 4WD LOW, on the side of the handle.
good luck and welcome to the club!! :D

Are you talking about the small Cherokee Wagoneer? Because all full-size wags in 87 have Selec-trac. Anyway Selec-trac has the option of being full time all-wheel drive and Command-trac is a part time only transfercase.

87 would have a NP229 in it.
It is a full size waggy. So the NP229, or selctrac, is the transfer case? And it has two shifters, one on the floor and one on the dash?
Thanks

The NP229 is the Selec-trac case. The switch on the dash puts you in to "fulltime" 4wd when switched to 4wd. The transfer case lever is left down for "fulltime" mode then pulled up to 4lo for off-road or slippery conditions only
The 208 was still avail in 87(last year) but rare as is an 87 Wag with the 258(also last year). Most with either were fleet rigs sold to the USFS, power companies etc. Both were finally dropped when they dropped the J-truck line in 88. But since you have the dash switch it's the 229 Selectrac.

The above describes Selec- & Commandtracs, but where/how does Quadratrac fit into that scheme of drive types? [mine 'self-destructed' & replaced it with a BW selectable 2/4, so just curious.]

Last year for the Borg Warner Q-Trac was 79. ;) Selec & Command Tracs 80 and up.
Then there's the full-time NP 219 avail from 80-82 also called Quadratrac by AMC. Lame attempt to ride on the good name of the previous real BW QT. The Selectrac(229) didn't start till 83. Get's confusing huh? smile.gif
