View Full Version : Can I use the factory fog lamp wiring?
I'm installing Hella 500 series driving lamps :D and I was wondering if I could use the factory fog lamp wiring for these lamps or will I have to install the wiring harness in the kit? Thanks Thanks Thanks

I dont think I would use the stock wires. What you can do is use the stock wire to activate a relay and then have the relay power the lights. much better way to do it and you dont have all the amps running under the dash.

I think in the 87, the lights already run off a relay (?). I seem to recall replacing a relay on my driver's side inner fender well to get the fogs to work...in any event, I would at the bare minimum upgrade the wiring to the lights to a larger gauge.

I'd like to see some pics once you get it done, I'm getting Hella 500's for Christmas and not sure how I'll mount them. The relay is probably the best way, with the stock wiring just to activate the relay.
Ok...I'll probably use the stock to trigger the relay...I'll take some pics on Saturday when I install them and put them up....How do you post the photos on the board..just paste them or do you have to link them like the avatar?

Just bypass the relay. Its only purpose is to prevent you from using the fog lights when your high beams are on.

I would use the relay. Maybe change it so it doens't just turn on when low beams are on. Use the relay to trigger the circuit.

The stock foglamps use a 30A relay triggered by the fog-light switch next to the steering-column. That's probably exactly what the wiring with the lights includes; no reason to replace what's there with an identical setup.
The (+) lead in for that switch comes off the headlight switch; to enable it to run at any time, just power it from a lead that hooks to an ordinary ignition-switched source.
Thanks for all your answers..I'll most likely do the bob barry thing......sounds easy enough and I'll not have to run through the firewall again.....
