Anyone ever find a little reddish plastic plug in the oil sump? I just did!

It looks like it might go into the round hole in the oil pick-up, but I'm not sure.

Below (I hope) is a picture from Hayne's of the pick-up. Looks like the round hole is open in their example as well, but I've noticed their example is not exactly a perfect original! http://users.erols.com/mathewg/oilpick.jpg
pick-up is upside down because the engine in this picture is on an engine stand.

Same here, When I dropped the pan to replace my rear seal I found the same plug. Couldn't find where it goes or any info so I left it out. been a month now and no problems

I found that same part; it does fit into that small hole in the pickup. It is apparently designed to prevent the pickup from bottoming out on the bottom of the oil-pan sump, so there is some clearance under there to draw in the oil.

I was kind of at a loss as to what I would replace that button with, but then it occurred to me that a small bolt, maybe a socket-head cap-screw, would work and be more secure than the plastic piece.

Thanks, never thought of that (to keep it from bottoming) but with that design, sure makes sense.

Any suggestions to getting the image to show up in the post?

PS. I thought I had to drop the exhaust y, but discovered that turning the crank a little and taking off the transmission dust shield was sufficient. The next reick to wiggling it out required turning the pan 90 degrees after freeing it from the oil sump. and slipping it back toward the tranny.

when i replaced the rear main seal on mine, i saw the plug in the bottom of the pan. i put it back on the pickup and reinstalled the pan. when i was all finished, i noticed the plug on the driveway! i must have knocked it off with the oil pan. so i just left it out. that was 30,000 miles ago. no problem. and if the plug is supposed to rub on the bottom of the pan, dont use a nice hard bolt, or you may start seeing it thru the hole worn in the pan!

Thanks guys,
Well, Off topic sort of.
Today was a bust.
The p/s engine mount (aka isolator) was busted. My local ordered two (the other side is gooey on the bottom). Each was different. I took both while they ordered another. Well I go to put it on and guess what. The new one has coarse threads, and the special nuts I started on from the old one are fine threads (better resistance to loosening). Anyway, it was well past quitting time, so I'll run a die on the threads and hunt down some 3/8 nuts and washers in the am or later tonight.
Getting the mount off was more fun than it first looked like! Ended up taking the braket off the engine.
Well, its starting to rain, so the project may be on hold as most of my light comes from the garage door.
