Has any one converted from the motorola type alternator to the delco?
I modified the top of the braket to fit the delco alternator but now I need to fix the wiring. I know that one of the two wires needs to go to the output post and the other needs to go to an ignition on with a 10 ohm resister, but which one goes to what, they are labled 1 and 2. Also is there a wire i can use that is hot when the ignition is on? What wires do i remove now that the motorola and its regulator are gone? I think I should disconect the amp meter too now that im installing a volt gauge. I could probable figure out what wires to remove my self but a little advice from some one who has done it would be nice.
thanks

#1 terminal goes via a light to the ignition(Run terminal). Now in theory you are supposed to hook it up in order to excite the field. However as the attatched webpage says you can get enough leakage excitation without it. I have successfully not used this terminal more than once without having to change out to a self excitation regulator. Try it without if you want at the worst you'll just have to hook it up.
#2 is your sensing wire. Yep you must hook this one up and you can just hook it up to the alt output. However this may sound anal but it is better to hook it up to the battery +ve post if possible to get a more accurate charge. Its better to sense battery voltage than the alternator output voltage. Depending on the output wire size going from the alt. to the battery you may well get a difference in voltage readings at the batt/alt. +ve terminals. Note though it will successfully work if you just go from #2 to the alt +ve output.
The link from tadsal and the one that I gave although very similar contradict each other slightly in that mine says #1 is excitation, #2 is sensing. Tadsal's link says that #2 is excitation and sensing. Hmmm this might be to much information at this stage! I personally go with the write-up on the link that I provided.
any pics of how you modded the bracket? i am gonna do the same thing.

Sorry I didnt take any pics. I just cut about 2.5" of the bracket in half by the top hole and cut the rear peice out. Then I put a spacer and bolt to hold it at the right width for the delco then I welded a 3/16 plate on top of the braket and peice I cut out that over laps the two halves and is a little longer than the cut. It does not look realy pretty but should be plenty strong.
Thanks for the alternator inforation. Is there a stock wire that I can connect to the #1 terminal? Can I just cut out all the wires that went to the motorola? Now how do I get rid of the amp meter?
thanks

To get rid of the ammeter, just run a nice big fat wire directly from the big output post on your alternator to your + terminal on the battery, or, to the side of the starter solenoid where it connects to the battery. I'm assuming you have a fender-mounted starter solenoid like I do. I used a 12 gauge wire, I also ran a 2 gauge ground cable from the - battery terminal to the extra bolt on the case of the alternator. I am going to upgrade the + wire on the alternator once I get a bigger alt.

What about feed to the fuse box ect? leave the stock wire? Then wouldnt the amp meter still be conected but not reading corectly?
I guess I'll just hafto look and the wiring and a diagram to figure it out.
