In my 89GW the interrior lights do not work....the rear cargo light, the 'map lights' on the center compass temp thing (compass and temp do work) and the Light under the hood.....now the under dash lights work and the 'lights are on' chime works but the 'keys are in the ignition' chime doesn't...
Now they are all on the same circuit (the fuse is good) according to my Jeep book..so i am wondering where they all meet (wiring wise)
can anyone help??

When I first got my GW, my dome lights didn't work either. I traced the wires which ran from the roof down the post between the drivers side doors, under the carpet to an open connector under the carpet in front of the drivers seat. Although I have numerous unused connectors hanging loose behind the instrument panel, none fit this one. I really have to wonder what the DSPO's did to the wiring which is screwed up all over the vehicle. I ended up splicing a wire from the drivers side floor lamp to the dome light feed wires under the carpet which corrected the problem. Who knows, maybe it never worked.

The dome lite blew in my 88 GW. After I replaced it the dome lite only works when the rear doors are opened. When you open the front doors only the small lite under the dash works.
Any ideas thanks

guys, check out the wires going up the left rear door post. the one the l/r is hinged to.
the wires rot out under the carpet, behind the seatbelt anchor.the seatbelt reel has to be removed for access.all 4 of my wags have had this prob. its the price you pay for not living in the desert, i guess. :d

Maybe check to see if there is 12 volts up at the front/rear dome lights. If the under dash lights work when the door(s) are opened then the grounding switch(s) in the door jamb(s) are working. The dome lights/under dash lights are always hot and there is a coomon grounding system that goes to all the four door jamb switches and also to the switch on the headliner back in the rear cargo area.
If the under dash lights are working when the door is opened then either you are not getting 12 volts to the ceiling lights or bulbs are bad or the common ground is not connected to the dome lights. check the wiring specified in the previous posts and then make sure you've got 12 volts to the dome lights. If the still don't work then keep following the circuit ground back down to the door switches.
As for the ignition key chime not uncommon with the wear and tear on the ignition switch for this not to work. Also some keys will "chime" while others won't in the same ignition switch. This has been the case on the last two GWs I have had. Typcally the key must be inserted all the way in. If your intent on fixing it start by replacing the ignition switch if it is worn or open up the column and get to the switch to put a jumper to the wire for the chime to check the circuit to ensure the wiring is intact.

OK, when the doors are open nothing is on....I can turn on the under dash lights using the interior light switch on the dash, otherwise no lights...does this mean I have a grounding problem in my doors???

Andy D is right about the wiring under the carpet I just fixed that wiring had to reconnect them they were rotted under there now the only thing left on mine is to fix the door switches that control the interior lights they are rusted and not getting a very good contact when the doors are open. good luck

The Interior lights do not come on when you open the front doors. When you open the back doors the all come on. If you check out the technical section there is a fix for this problem.

Sorry, I assumed the the under dash lights came on when a door was opened also. Sounds like the problem is in the wiring, but the door switches are always suspect - just unscrew the door jamb switch and ground the wire attched to it to check it, that is if your lights are working.
This info is from the wiring diagram from an 84 so take it with a grain of salt but I would have to believe that the basic wiring such as dome lights is very similar in all 84-up GWs.
The interior light switch on the dash is wired closest to the under dash lights, and is in the common ground circuit for interior lights along with the door jamb switches and the "cargo area" switch by the rear dome light. There are a couple of connectors going to the map lights/dome (and power for the vanity lamp - pass side visor) lights that have both the power and ground in them and these connectors are after the interior light switch on the dash.
Soooooo, if you have under dash lights but no dome/map lights there should be a 3 wire connector - on my 87 the connector has red/white and black w/trace going in and brown/black/blue coming out - this connector is just under the carpet on the drivers side, kinda up on the firewall. The 3 wires out join the tailight wires that run on the drivers side floor and then up the post between the drivers side doors. You may also have a working seat belt buzzer if the problem is with this connection. The blue wire should be the buzzer and the brown (12v) and the black (ground) are for the interior lights on the roof, so if you check the black and brown wires with a meter they should make a complete circuit assuming that at least one bulb is good.
There are also connectors - one for each the brown wire and the black wire which I beleive are at where the wires come out of the post (at the top) - this is according to the diagram - I didn't pull the headliner to check my 87 http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif!!
Good luck, I hope ya find the problem.

This is as it should be from the factory. I think bigbry's problem may well be in the wiring harness after the under dash lights.
Any luck with the lights yet Bigbry ??

I just fixed my dome lights last weekend on my '89. They didn't work with the front doors. I was a problem caused by the DSPO in the wiring harness below the drivers seat at the door piller. ALSO_ ONLY THE REAR LIGHTS WILL COME ON WITH THE DOOR. The front lights do not work with the doors. I spent much time trying to figure this out, I have most figured out I assume they work manually- Your compass works as mine does. Start with the wiring at the door piller. IT is a black /white stripe. You should have power at the wire with the door shut.
