All I know is that when I swapped out the motor on mine, the new motor wouldn't fire because the computer wasn't hooked up. I changed the wiring harness and that got the motor fired up, but now it won't shut off. I am not sure if that problem is connected to the wiring, yet.

Cow: i have talked with rustyjeep about this. Seams my jeep has already had the by-pass done to it. But he has some diagrams on how to get rid of the computer. It doesnt just control the carb, it also controls the distributer timing. So if you unplug the computer you have to redo the purple line fromt he ignition box to go straight to the distributer.

It will run with the carb unplugged, but it wont run as it should. As the computer will get confused annd will mess with the timing of the distributer.

The Carter BBD was used on a bunch of vehicles in its lifetime. Jeeps after 1981 used a "stepper motor" version that was computer controlled and all kinds of fun to try and keep running properly. So long as the donor carb you're looking at is in good condition, it should work fine.

BTW, I've been dealing with this POS on my 82 Wag for a month now. It was leaking gasoline at the throttle shaft, which I've temporarily repaired with RTV until I can get another carb on there. I've already bought a rebuilt engine that has a Weber K551 on it, which shoud tide me over while I take the present engine and rebuild it, fuel inject it, and perhaps even supercharge it.

But IMHO, the BBD has to go. Besides, it sounds too much like the sound a child makes with index finger and lips -- B-B-D-B-B-D-B-B-D-...

Ok, I have only had to deal with the pre stepper BBD's and they were not to
bad, the biggest thing was the throttle bores tended to wear out, but they were
easy to ream out and insert a bronze bushing in. Personaly I would think about
doing a HEI up grade and getting a pre stepper BBD and go computer less.

I am gona be ordered a Weber 32/36 progressive 2v carb for mine. There is a kit sold for jeeps that has all the needed linkage and such for 330 bucks.

I have NEVER regretted putting the Weber on my girl.

It is the best thing I have done to her. Second being the HEI.

Webbers are great...but the CJ world has found that the MC2150 is very good too.

For by-passing the computer and keeping the original BBD, do an internet search for

"Nutter By-pass" John Nutter has found a way to bypass the computer entirely...works wonderful!

Say, mdill, I really like the repair idea with the bronze bushing. There is wear on the throttle shaft as well as in the hole on the aluminum housing.

I was thinking about JBWelding both components and then drilling/sanding to get a nice fit, but I really like your idea and think I'll try it.

i have the weber on my 77 CJ-5. It is a great carb and easy to setup. Unfortunately it won't pass emissions in AZ so i have to switch back to the carter every year for emissions.
