I Just bought an 87 Grand Wagoneer and am considering the Eldebrock Performer Package for the 360. My research has led me to believe that those using this "package" are generally pleased with the power improvements. What I haven't seen are any comments concerning the emissions aspect of this swap. In Maryland we are subject to emissions testing. No-one looks under the hood but its gotta be clean at the tailpipe. I plan to add the EGR intake and performer cam along with the carb. (Although Summitt doesn't list a "package" that includes the EGR intake). At the same time I'll do the TFI with MSD ignition and probably a hi-flow cat and muffler but keep single exhaust. So, has anyone run a 360 with this combo through a smog test? And how'd it do? Can anyone strongly recommend another way for me to go? I just want more ooomph as this thing will get a lift and some 33's and it seems to struggle to exceed 60MPH now. The incentive for this whole thing is lackluster power with small tires and 3:31's and a massive oil leak at the front of the 360 that looks as if it originate at the intake. I figure I gotta pull it to fix it and I see no reason not to upgrade at the same time.

I rebuilt my 360 with the Edelbrock Performer Package and passed stringent Phoenix emmission testing with flying colors, even with the original cat (136K mi). I did replace a good amount of the original emmissions hardware, though. Pay attention to the air tubes on the exhaust manifolds, mine were full of holes. I prefer the stock cast iron exhaust manifolds, but if you need to repalce the air tubes ($$$), it may be cost effective to purchase the Edelbrock headers - I saw some for sale on a recent post for a very good price. As for performance, it has increased dramatically, however I do experience some hesitation off the line. I hope the TFI and MSD upgrades I do next will cure the problem. If I had it to do all over again, I probably would have chosen fuel injection.

What effect did the Edelbrock Pkg. have on MPG? What carb are you using? I intend to keep the stock manifolds as well. Any numbers i.e. 0-60 or something before vs after or just a subjective improvement? I just bought this thing and have driven it less than 50 miles total but I have not been at all impressed - no off-line grunt and it really wheezes at high speed attempts.

I have a 1980 J20 with the edelbrock package, I havent had much time to really take it out and run it but Im not impressed with the cam at all, it has the performer intake and a 1406 carb. I have a 74 J10 with a 2 barrel (stock) that will blow the doors off the J20. It kind of acts like its not getting full throttle. I have it apart doing a lot of little stuff, insulation and bucket seats and brakes. Once I get it all back together I will get in to whats going on with the way it runs. I bought it this way, the engine only has 15,000 on it, but looking at the other stuff the PO did on it there is no telling what I will find. MG :D :D :D

I just finished doing just about everything you were talking about:

Performer Intake
Performer 1400 carb
Performer Cam
Performer double roller timing chain
MSD Pro Billet Distributor
MSD 6a Box
Hi Flow Cat
Flowmaster 70 series

The performance is fatastic. Not sure about gas mileage yet I keep mashing the gas petal to hear the motor roar (I giggle like a school girl every time). So once I get over that I bet I'll get decent gas mileage. I also had no problem passing emissions. Some people prefer the summit cam to the performer but I have no complaints. I tow a boat and the motor runs superb.

If you are concerned about the sniffer test you can find a school (college) that has an exhaust gas analyzer and see what you get. Then you can tune your engine acordingly to pass.

I was just wondering if anyone had the cam and lifters in a smoged CA jeep.. I live in cali and have to get smogged in the most strict county in the state.. has anyone had any experience with these? I need to get new springs and rockers so I don't wanna buy them then get the Edelbrock kit later... Any advice would be great!

dnixon- ever thought about an LPG conversion? You'd probably get a discount on something for doing it in CA...

LPG has less energy per unit volume than gasoline so beware. Its possible but its also easier to do a Nat. Gas Conversion. Most people don't know it but Nat Gas is basically 130oct!! So you could theoretically jack your compression WAY UP!!

I don't even know what LPG stands for... hmmmm...... Well California would prefer if you just never opened your hood's. You either take it to a mechanic or you just buy another car is their idea... especially nice with the new emission laws california's gov. just signed regarding car manufactures emissions of new vehicles. I have heard that they are even thinking of doing a SEALED hood. Where only professional mechanic's can work on it.. I don't think it will ever happen but you never know there are a lot of eviromental nuts here so anything is possible...

Can you Edlebrock users give me the approx price for the entire Performer package? I mean including intake/carb/cam/lifters and any other parts I'm missing--I've been thinking about this one for a while. Thanks!
