View Full Version : What is normal for the first start of the day...

When I leave my GW for a few days without starting it, one pump of the pedal isn't enough. I usually have to do two pumps before I turn the key to start it.

If I drive it daily, one pump is only needed. Is this normal? By the way, this has had tune-up, ignition upgrade, and new rebuilt carb put on.

(By the way, did the same thing before the new carb)

What I think you are experiencing is the bleed off of the accelerator pump over time. When a vehicle sits, the fuel pump will gradually lose pressure as well as in the accelerator pump. This is nothing abnormal.

Sometimes mine only needs one pump, sometimes two. If one doesn't start it I pump it again. You could always just get in the habit of pumping the pedal two times evertime and then you won't even know anything is different.

No Pumps. Just starts.

HAHAHA! I have to get a starter/charger, starter fluid, and a hammer. I hook up the starter/charger, pump it 15 times and then crank it for 10 seconds straight. Spray a generous amount of starter fluid in the carb, crank it for another 10 seconds. It coughs and sputters this time. Now I pump it another 5 times, spray starter fluid in the carb while leaning out of the drivers door around the the hood turning the key and pumping the gas at the same time. Spray the starter fluid in 3 second sperts until it fires up! Then I'm good to go. The hammer is in case this metheod ever stops working.

Me, if mine sits for one day, one pump is fine. four or five days...I have to pump and pump and pump and crank then pump some more....finally starts and runs fine after that.

I second that Mtn goat, but only on my 258

Is it better to pump then start or pump and start at same time???

Both my jeeps start fine.. The J10 takes a bit of workon cold mornings because I have the choke wired open until I can put in a manual choke.

I never used to have a "fuel bleed-off" problem with the old MC2100. I could let that thing sit for weeks and all it would take was a few pumps. With my Edelbrock if the truck sits for more than a few days, crank until float bowl is full, one pump, and vroom. Glad I'm not the only one with this affliction. I wonder if a check valve in the fuel line would cure this problem?

The way I figure it, if it starts before the battery goes dead, life is good, no matter how many pumps.
Seriously, one or two pumps is definitely within the scope of a "normal" 15-20 year old vehicle.

I usually start the day with 2 pumps, it starts, dies, I crank it again-one more pump-then she lives. (tired 360-MC2100 combo)

1 to 2 pumps is the normal thing with Franklinstein. However, I like Wagothing's "hammer" method too as I find that I have to threaten Franklinstein with "needing a tune-up with a rather large axe" from time to time.

Look, one pump, two pumps, pumping while starting starting after pumping, whatever, nothing is going to hurt it and no one way is right or wrong just do whatever you need to to get the **** thing started. I'd run around mine three times in a row everyday if that's what it took to start it.

With all the talk lately of starting and oil pressure, is 60 ok pressure for a cold start after sitting for a week or so? After running for about 10 min drops to about 20 idle/40 hwy.

2 or 3 pumps then start for my 258 if overnight. If more than 2 days then its pump alot to get it going. 3 or more days without driving and I pump, then turn it over while pumping then after awhile it fires up. Never failed to start yet. Knock on wood. I probally just jinxed it.

If mine sits for a few days then its turn over and pump once right away while starting... Fires up every time.

If I pump it first it will flood... I think its running a little rich... smile.gif

1. turn key to "on" position
2. turn on electric fuel pump, let it pressurize.
3. pump once, I can hear the squirt of the fuel as I do. {2x when its really cold}
4. it starts fast.

I cant say enough good things about the electric fuel pump conversion.
