hello to all im am new to this site so try to bare with me.i have a 1973 jeep pickup j4000 with quadratrack . I need to know if you can bolt the low range reduction on the back of the standered quadratrack without the reduction unit?i have pulled the back cover off and there is a round spacerer looking thing that has a snap ring in the middle off it.I can not get the snap ring off to get the spacer to come off.so i was woundering if the reduction unit is even soposse to be able to bolt on the back of the one with out it? also can any one tell me how exacally the quadratrack is soppose to work in detail i have herd so many different ways but i want to know the real way. douse it really lock all four wheels in to make them all pull at once?how is it better then a normal 4wheel drive?douse it perform better off road then others??one last question before i bore everyone,is ther a way totell if the system is working besides get it stuck and then trying it?also if you brake a frount drive shaft can you lock it in emergencey drive and drive it out on the rear wheels thanks alot inadvace paul ps is the low range reduction unit really worth all the trouble to go through???

I will help you with a few...

yes you can run w/o front drive shaft...lock in EDrive and run it

low is really cool!

low was an option so yes QT w/o can be retrofitted to use low...I ahve heard it is pretty easy

QT is really cool...the word is change the chain every 50,000 miles..

the rest of the Q's you will find answers for in either the archives or the tech section of this site....

good luck and welcome!...and remember..there is no such thing as a dumb question!

Here's why *I* think the QT case is so good:

1. Full-time operation for on-road traction. I highly value this in the mixed-traction conditions we see here up north, and for rainy weather.

2. True part-time mode in E-drive for HD off-road use. And for driving with one driveshaft disconnected.

3. Low-range 4wd in both full and part-time modes.

The basic premise behind the QT case, however, was that you never had to think about using it; its internal clutches directed power to wherever it was needed, and did it effectively enough that its part-time mode was really what it was advertised as: an EMERGENCY drive mode for when you're REALLY stuck!

Yes the reduction unit is worth the effort esp if you go off road.

the q/tracs work well and I used one for many years, but they do not lock up all four wheels, you would need lockers in the axles to do that and putting a locker in the frt of a q/trac rig used on the road is just a bad idea as it would be very tough to turn and axle breakage is probable.
The snap ring in the collar must be expanded to the limits of the slot to get the collar off. Apair of tranny snap ring pliers are the best tool to do this with although I usally use 2 screw drivers and cuss a lot because I keep forgetting to go buy a pair. You will reuse the snap ring and you will also need longer bolts than the ones holding the plate on. Don't forget to fill the reduction unit with special sauce.
One last thing, remember to lock the e-drive in before hitting the mud hole so you don't blow the splines out of the clutch cones.
