Hi all, i hope some of you can help me out with this one...As you can see I have a 78'
cheif. I have to get the emissions inspected by the 17th of this month. My jeep
Has no:
1. No smog pump
2. The holes in the exh. manifolds are plugged.
3. The EGR valve is hooked to nothing
4. There is no catilytic(sp?) converter.
5. No charcoal canister
6. No vacum diagram
7. No diverter valve
8. No place to even put or squeeze in a smog
pump, no brackets
9. The only, emmissions reference on the motor is on the air filter housing. It says"
This motor conforms to the emissions standards and regulations of 78' for heavy duty motors(401)" Nothing else
Now with all this said, how in the hecht can I find out what really came on my jeep. Some
people say emissions didn't come out until 79'. Some say it started half way through 78', some say emissions equip and the cat were optional, the guy at antwerpen jeep told, me that all cherokee's from that year, had emissions euip. Who do I believe? I see no point in even calling the MVA. I don't trust those people at all. Does DaimlerChrysler and or Jeep even keep those records on those models? Who would I try and speak to if they did? This is driving me crazy. I can't afford or even have the time to reconstruct an emissions setup, on my jeep. I was thinking of just takin it in, failing taking it back, failing again and then pay $200 to get a cat put on and hope they'll give me a repair waiver. Will that work, do they even let vehicles with no cat even test? Do they look?.I have no idea, I really don't wanna take it off the road during snow season in Md..Any help would greatly be apreciated. I'm desperate
Thank you all and good night http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif

From looking at other posts (do a search). I think you will find that a 78 model year FSJ was, like pick up trucks, not as strictly required as cars. That means no cat coverter. Yes EGR.
Start asking your buddies in Md. Everyplace is different.
Philly area now has a visual underhood check, done before they will let you test for results. NJ use to just care about results and seeing the cat if it was supposed to be there..but they just changed their system last year.

My 49-state 78 Cherokee also lacks the charcoal canister, cat, smog pump etc...I think the emissions stuff was phased in during the production year (like Jeep did with everything else). I don't remember the MD emissions laws, but surely they can't bust you for not having emissions equipment on a vehicle that came from the factory like that! Or can they? I WOULD contact the MVA and see what they can tell you--just tell them that you're thinking about buying the vehicle (little white lie--at one time you DID think about it!) and you've been assured it has all factory equipment in place, just no emissions stuff.
If you DO have to add a cat, JCW carries them for around $125. Let us know what happens--I'm probably moving back home to VA at the end of the summer and I'd like to keep my FSJ!

For the state of GA I have spoken with the head smog nazi leader guy and the rule is that they cant make you put on something it didnt have to begin with and chero's and j-trucks didnt come with cat converters till 79. Not to say jeep didnt put em on built in 78 as a 79 model-as others have stated rules are different for each state though.

I'ld bet that the build date is not important, its the model year. Thats all that the VIN reveals. That equipment, especially the cat was pretty expensive. I'm sure it was not added before required. Clearly all the companies saw it was cheaper to make a special package for Calf. and leave the stuff off for the 49 other states when ever they could.
