Ok, I'm fairly ignorant here, so help me out please. I know that a PTO can run off either the tranny or x-case, depending on which you happen to have, but what I don't know is what it really does. I know you can use them for things like winches, but what else? Are they like a hydrolic pump or something?
Thanks,
Anthony

A PTO is simply a gearbox that transfers engine power from the tranny or xfer (whichever it's installed on), through a gearbox (for gear reduction and to change direction), and to an output shaft. It can be used to run anything you would use an engine or electric motor to run--hydraulics, winch, lawnmower deck, snowblower, pasta machine, etc.

Hehe, well, guess I'll have to look into a good sized pasta machine then. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif
Is the winch that came stock on these rigs any good? Can I run any other winch off a PTO?
Thanks,
Anthony

you can run a driveshaft to the front bumper and mount a PTO winch. You could power a saw about anything you could dream up. By the way the one on the T18 I have has a reverse in the PTO it will run in both directions.

Ok, thanks for the info guys. Now I've got a lot better idea at what I'm looking at.
Crazy_Jeepman: You don't happen to have the driveshaft and the winch do you? http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Well, nothing's perfect I guess. How good were the stock winches anyway? Would it be feesable to look for a stock one or just get a new one? How were they mounted? Behind the bumper somewhere?
Thanks for looking at all my questions.

I have seen many types of configuration as far as mounting them. I always liked PTO winches as I used to drive Tow Truck and that is what I ran on them was PTO winches. then we ran Hydraulic winches of a PTO driven Pump I do believe that to be the best setup yet but BIG $$$$$$. By the way Cecil14 Anthony what weekend did you say you were heading up I forgot and I want to be sure I do not plan something and not be here.

I'm not too worried about getting there before noon. Hehehe, it's probably going to take me 7 or 8 hours to get there anyway, so even if I leave at like 8AM, it's going to 4 before I get there. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif I'll give you a call when we get somewhere near the bridge. Can you email me you # one more time, must have deleted it, gotta start watching that.
Thanks,
Anthony

Is this a PTO winch on this cherokee? Anyone got any pics of the whole setup?
How do you run this kind of winch, don't see any levers or switches.

Just curious. This chero is supercool.

That would be one of the OEM Electric winches (think it was a ramsey (someone correct me if i'm wrong) similar operation to all the electric winches...

Definitely electric, might have been a sidewinder as neatly as it's tucked in there.
