4 wheel drive will not engage

I recently put in a new 360 engine in an 89 wagoneer. I did not remove tranny and the swamp went pretty smooth. I do not know how to shift into the 4 whl drive. I assume I put it in neutral and pull the lever. Am I wrong? It will not move and the dash switch does not seem to do anything.. The light does not come on either. Is there something I have missed..ie linkage, vacuum, or is this just a lack of brain cells?

Try putting it in drive and cruise about 1-3 mph and see if you can pull it or just try pulling it in all gears.

In an 89 Grand Wagoneer, if it is like an 88, 4 x 4 is a vac switch in the center lower portion of the dashboard...you push the lever from left to right to engage...in an 88, the lever on the floor switches from 4H to N to 4L and pulls up for 4L...while you are in nuetral on the trans shifter and rolling about 3 or 4 miles per hour...hope this helps
