I know this sounds crazy but I'm having one hell of a go around looking for a new or rebuilt power steering pump, so I'm seriosly considering just converting to manual steering. how hard is it find a manual steering box and how hard of a swap is it.

Message didn't say, but why are you replacing? Is your pump not rebuildable? The rebuild kits are usually pretty cheap and not too hard to tackle.

reason is, it leaks really bad, like really really bad, when i trun the wheel i can hear fluid squirting out. i havn't found a rebuild kit ethier, it's from a '66 327. uncommon moter and power steering on thosae yaers was even more uncommon.
thanks

tim - try D&L 4WD(770) 567-1229. If these guys can't find one, they can't be had. He's been in the Jeep parts business for 30+ years and has parts in warehouses for just about everything. he is also very reasonable.

I hope the above suggestion helps you find the part you're looking for....because you apparently want it fixed as you'd prefer!

I'd just like to add that I am under the impression(understanding) that FSJs used "power-assisted" steering for "power steering" setups. Thus, if you just "disconnected" the power steering unit and crimped the hoses or something, wouldn't it just be like reverting to "manual" steering by default? I'm just curious as I've known cases where people have just disconnected the power steering when they've had problems and live with manual.

BTW....had manual steering in my '77 J10. My '78(successor to the '77) has power steering....I was VERY glad to get the PS in the '78.....is really nice to have where you need it! I definitely prefer the PS myself.

Take care...

Most any type P power steering pump will work as far as I know (at least i think its a type P ;p) Any autos parts store will have one. even if you have to order it,, they can get it. The only prob i had was getting new power steering pump lines for my rig. But all works great now. I had to drive with no power steering for a while. THAT sucked!

Tim,
Did you check out the bone yards or ask for a rebuilt pump for an AMC car up to 1970. even though they went to the later motors they still used the pump with the reservoir on top. If you have the Ross power assist unit ( I think that 65 was the last year for that)let me know as I have a good one from the now dead parts Wag and can let you have the whole system at a reasonable price.
