Ok so my starter would crank the truck for a few seconds then it would lose hold on the flywheel and just spin, so put an new starter in. same thing with new starter. so i check all mounting, bottom mounting whole cast into tranny is really stripped and starter is moving around so drill it out and heli coil it. starter is now secure. try to start will not engauge at all now, just spins. so i fugure flywheel got warped looked at it, no warpage, no loose bolts from flywheel to torque converter...so i check to see if welds from ring to the main body of fly wheel got broken some how ..nope....what is wrong?? never seen this before neither has my brother.
i dont like this broken jeep anymore..thanks

I had alot(8 in a year) of starter problems. I tried everything just like you have. What finally made my starter work was when I spent the xtra money and got a good quality starter. I have not had a problem since. In the cheaper starters the bushing in the nose cone will not last long at all. Just one or two times of a "hard" start and the bushing is gone. Just my suggestion for your problem.

Really......those bushings are like butter in some of the rebuilds. I've had this starter on my truck for over a year now. I've had it off when I did the rear main seal and its still a good fit and starts my truck faultlessly.

I had to replace my flex-plate or the flywheel for autos. Good Luck

I had a lot of problems with rebuilt starters on my YJ. Got tired of returning them (had a life time warrently :D ). Decided to spend the money on a Mean Grean unit.

They have bearings not bushings, with a 4.4-1 gear reduction drive! :D Plus has a neat sound.

Check them out at: http://www.mean-green.com/
They make 'em for AMC V8's too. Going to install one on the GW when I do the engine rebuild.

Sounds like your flexplate is "flexed" Worth a try if you haven't already replaced yours.

but.. flexplates dont just warp from sitting from one start to the next..it is like a light on then off.it would have to be warped at some point at least 1/4 inch and there is no such bend not even a visable bend..i am looking into a NEW starter asd a opposed to rebuilt

Take off the inspection plate and watch what is happening when the starter is engaged. The starter gear should extend forward, fully engage the flexplate ring gear and only then start rotating to drive the ring gear and turn over the engine. There is a switch (set of contacts) inside the starter that is supposed to keep the starter gear from turning until the starter gear is extended and engaged with the flexplate ring gear. It is fairly easy to disassemble the starter and fix/adjust this set of contacts if the starter gear is turning before engaging the ring gear. You can also test the starter off the vehicle with a set of jumper cables to determine if this is what's happening - just be careful.
Inspect the flexplate ring gear for damage. The flexplate could be damanged or there could be a shimming problem with the starter mounting. If the starter gear begins turning before engaging the ring gear it will grind down itself, the ring gear or both. If the entire setup is stock with the correct starter there shouldn't be a shimming problem but at this point check everything.
