Someone please tell me it's possible I didn't throw
a rod.I came home last night,and when I parked I
realized there was a loud knocking sound coming
from the engine.Strange thing is I just blew the flange
or something in my muffler on my jap car and it sounds
real similar.Kinda like shaking a coffee can with a nut in it.
I know it's a long shot but my exaust (on the jeep)comes out
under the cab, so it's hard to tell until my buddy gets here to give it
some gas while I crawl underneath. When I started her this morning
I still heard it with the engine high idle(warm up),but it went away after
kicking her down(low idle). But it was still there when I gave it gas.
How do I know for sure? Somebody told me it could be the water pump.
Is this possible? It's a very steady and even knock.I'm very scared and not
very mechanically inclined. Is it time for a 401?If so,is there an even better swap?
Rebuild?PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is the oil pressure at? Also did you check the oil to make sure it is full? Sorry had to ask.

I have a exhaust leak in my exhaust manifold. It sounds similar to a knocking... more of a popping. At idle you can not hear it at all but at higher rev's you can hear it big time. Heep exhaust leak in mind!!!!!

#1 check your oil level as pc mentioned.. i lose enough oil that if i dont check it often enough it can get a quart or more low and then start knocking.. i slap in a few bottles of cheapon gas station oil and im off again..

Is the knock consistent with the rpm's?? or a fixed frequency?

Well guys, it's not an exhaust issue that much I'm sure of now.
Even though I already have a leaky header gasket. This sure sounds like it's
coming from inside the drivers side valve cover or somewhere under the manifold.
I Also found one of the drivers side spark plugs one turn away from falling out.
I don't see how that could be related though.(and no I didn't put them in)
so.............
How do I check the oil pressure without a gauge on the dash?
The level is fine and she never burns a drop.
There is a oil light however that comes on all the time, and I just figured it was a bad connection.
Plus the oil pump was just rebuilt.(maybe poorly?
The truck has been sitting for years and I just barley started driving it.This is the first
real problem I've had.Still starts right up, runs smooth and dosen't jump around.

BUT THERES A WOODPECKER IN MY ENGINE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

doesnt sound good. engines that sit collect condensation that will rust the journals on the crankshaft. the rust in turns scours the bearings. get an oil pressure reading with a mechanical guage. im assuming your rig has a 360 engine. rebuilding the oilpump wont help if the pump chamber in the timing case is worn out. thats the bad news. there is a chance that the noise is coming from the smog pump. is the hose off it?. try removing the belts that drive it and the p/s pump. pray a lot

May be a real long shot but could it be fuel knock ? Sometimes I cheap out and run low octane gas and every time I do the engine knocks. Especially under load. I'm used to fuel knock in a diesel but I didn't think it was possible to sound this bad in a gas engine. After reading a lot of posting here I swapped to running 93 octane Amoco. Ping and knock all went away after the gas swap and a jet swap.

Deisel knock is a great way to describe it.
Sounds just like a kabota tractor

You could have a lifter tick as well. i.e. sitting for a long time one of the lifters could have become dry and thus flat as they are hydraulic (right everyone...back me up here) These can be really loud and sound like an exhaust problem. Get yourself a cheap engine "stethoscope" and listen on metal points to find out where its really located.

As for the oil gauge, go to the local parts house and get yourself a mechanical oil pressure gauge and hook it up where the electrical sensor screws into the block's oil passages. You'll be able to get a direct reading of oil pressure.

Good Luck smile.gif

I'll check the oil pressure first thing tomorrow.
What will this tell me about the noise if it's not correct?

Check every bolt to the ring gear connecting the converter. One loose bolt will make a not-so-nice noise.
