I'm wanting to put a tranny cooler on my rig. I have been looking at the Perma-Cool brand. I'm trying to decide if a cooler with a fan is a better choice versus the regular cooler. My rig is a rockcrawler first backroad cruser second. I'm thinking the fan equiped cooler would be ideal but I would like to know if any one has the regular cooler and experiences associated with it.

Adding a trans-cooler is always a good idea as it adds life and takes some load off radiator cooler.Iv'e used Perma-cool before(have one on my Monte Carlo and put one on a friends Bonneville) and they make a good product. My GW has the factory Modine cooler and I do city/highway driving mostly.Although with the fan does sound like a good idea if it doesn't cause an obstruction of air for the engine fan.

Be sure to install it before the rad cooler to take the excess heat out before the fluid gets to the rad. This acomplishes two things, it helps keep the rad temp down and if the cooler takes out too much heat it will bring it back up to operating temp. Running atf too cold will also increase wear on the tranny. If you pull off the tranny lines and have someone fire it up while you watch you will know which is the pressure line and which is the return. Make sure to have some one besides you fire the motor hand as soon as it starts, shut it off, or you will have a mess. Install the cooler on the pressure side. I use a non fan cooler and the only tranny failure has been mechanical breakage on the output shaft and my brother lost one because he did not replace the front drive shaft u-joints when they were shot and the drive shaft took the corner of the tranny off.

That's good Jeepbob.....These new WJs hate cold oil.....They made a tranny kit for fixing that corner. Some mount a tranny guard but I've not seen a kit for it..have you??............. smile.gif ......ds..

Hey thanks for the replys. I'm aware on how and where to install the cooler. I guess I'm still unclear as to whether the cooler with the fan is over kill or a regular cool is not enough. I don't have AC on the rig so I will instal the cooler in front of the radiator. Is it a good idea toget a larger Gvw cooler than the one that is closest to the rig GVW

Where is the Perma Cool brand available? I'm paranoid about having the tranny fluid go thru the same radiator as engine coolant--antifreeze probably won't lube the tranny very well when the inner tranny coils spring a leak!!

Blake, you really need to run the radiator tranny cooler in series with the auxillary cooler. Helps moderate the fluid temperature. A thermostat for the tranny cooler is a good idea also. Too cold fluid is just as bad as too hot. And the radiator coolers fail about once every blue moon. I wouldn't worry about it.

Don,
No I have not seen a kit for it but a guard is not a bad idea.

You can get Perma-Cool stuff from Summit, Jegs, and even JcWhitney.
