From what years will the gas tank skid plate fit my '87 Grand Wagonneer?

'80-'83 Wagoneer
'80-'83 Cherokee
'84-'91 Grand Wagoneer

The earlier wagons had a skidplate option, but it's completely unlike the '80-up models, and it doesn't actually support the tank.

To quote Mr barry's above post "The earlier wagons had a skidplate option, but it's completely unlike the '80-up models, and it doesn't actually support the tank."

In other words the pre-80 tanks mount to the frame. The 80+ tanks mount to the so called skid plate which in turn is mounted to the frame. Can you custom modify the 79 optional skid plate and convert it to a gas tank mount for an 81...prolly but it won't work stock.

Is it possible to convert an '80 up to the older style system??? I'm not a fan of the later style skidplate system that rots the frame...

Anything is, of course, possible, but will it be worth the effort involved? You already have both that you can put side by side for a comparison, and you'll be able to see what will be involved.

To mount the 79-earlier system into a 80-later vehicle, I would imagine you'll need to use the earlier tank, with the skid plate, so that you don't puncture/damage the plastic tank.

Another option is to build a custom mount for the plastic tank, and install drain holes for moisture/water to drain/evaporate, but I wouldn't recommend it for the stock skidplate.
