The Good - i recently purchased a 82 cherokee with very little rust in PA. The BAD - 258ci motor w/904 auto trans,np 208 case, dana 44 front, w/lockouts and amc 20 rear. It was a stick truck and the pedal assembly is still there. I also bought for $250 79 cherokee with good 360ci motor, trans and case to put in the 82 but it has quadra track. I am told that the TH400 will not work for me because both differentials are offset on the Q-track system. i do not wish to switch the 82 to q-track. i am told by my local jeep guru Jerry (northfield) that i can (1) put a 727 behind the 360 and use my np 208 case (2) put a T-18 and dana 20 case. to do this i must swap the front dana 44, the pumpkin is on the drivers side on my 82 jerry said he would swap me a passenger side one for free. i will be using the cherokee for towing and light off roading. what will hold up better? I do not care if it's stick or auto i want durability. which is the better trans, case, front and back diff. combo THANX

Welcome to the forum....

Less work in putting the 208 behind the 727 for sure...

the 208 has a good 2.61:1 lo range.. that's a plus.

The D20/TH400 would require an axle swap, but you have a pass side drop in the 79 Chero.. so no need for you to swap with your buddy.

the D20 has a 2:1:1 lo range.

D20= gear driven
NP208= chain driven

Either way you go, they are both good cases....

Keep the AMC20 outback centered diff leaves you with room for option as the offset 44 from the QT equipped 79 doesn't.. though you can use it if needed.

Put the 360 in front of the TF904 and drive easy until you've got a TF727 to swap in.

Are you positive it's a TF904 and not a TF999? If it's the 999, you can just leave it be. That's a pretty sturdy transmission.
