i know many guys runs manuals in waggies as opposed to auto. i want to swap out the th400 in my '74 wag for a manual. i need to know what tranny to use? i want a four speed with a very low first gear. i want bolt in instalation. also is there any tranny jeep used that will make use of my Q.T. and keep my drive shafts the same length? also what parts do i need from the salvaged cherokee to make this work? i have looked at all the linkage and what not. but does anybody have detailed experince with this to make my swap alittle easier? also what clutch brand is best. thanks trevor

Well, there's no bolt-on or pre-made solution, so whatever you do will need to be completely custom. You could use the long 10-spline output shaft from the tranny as the basis for a spud-shaft that would connect to the output of whatever tranny you're thinking of using.
I've heard of at least one adapted to a Nissan tranny in Australia, but none stateside.

a t18/d20 swap will be a somewhat time consuming, yet bolt in deal if you find a complete rig to scrounge all the little parts. dont worry about keeping your QT.the only thing it will bolt to is a th400,and its chain driving both outputs and aluminum case make it not worth the effort of adapting. the d20 is a stronger, more reliable, cast iron gear driven case. the t18 is a heavy duty truck 4 speed that is available in a "wide ratio" version with a 6.39 to 1 first gear. to my knowledge, all fsjs got the wide ratio, only certain years cjs got the close ratio with a 4 to 1 first.
just make sure that your donor rig has the same engine youve got,as 6 and 8 cyl versions are alittle different. if your parts rig is a wag or chero, you should even be able to use the driveshafts.
there are alot of times an auto is nice, but i prefer a manual. but my opinion is biased-i love the water, and a water filled auto tranny has ruined my wheelin fun more than once. a manual is a little more forgiving of water contamination. i also like the "put it in granny low range and be able to crawl over stuff without touching the gas" option http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif really cool.
