Thanks to all for the help on the CB. I'll post some pics of the installation soon. The mount looked really well, and I don't mind saying so myself :D :D :D . It goes in right were the old analog clock was - looks stock.

All the Georgia boys got together this last weekend for a wrench-a-thon, and we got'er all done thanks to some help from Marc Banks (have to throw him some props, the man is an electrical Jeep wizard).

Anyways, we did some testing in the driveway, and all was well. As I drove home, I talked to a few truckers on channel 19, and got playing around with the switches. I really have no idea what they do, so I was hoping someone would explain it to me.

Switch 1 - a toggle type switch right next to where the microphone hooks in. On the top part, is says ANL, the bottom is not labelled, it's an on-or-off kind of deal. It seems to be linked to clarity and volume somehow.

Dial 1 - squelch. The squelch dial turns about 200 degrees. The first 60 degrees or so is all static, after that it's all clear. Should I keep the dial right on the threshold off no static or keep it where you can just barely hear the static?

I should be able to figure this stuff out myself, but it's hard to convince a trucker to tell me a 10 minute story while I play with the buttons.

Any help would be appreciated...hint, hint RANDE! :D :D :D

anl = automatic noise limiter. should reduce or eliminate impulse-type noise, like ignition static.

set your squelch so the static just dissapears. anything stronger than the squelch setting will open the squelch and you will hear it.

have fun!

What SM said. I would suggest leaving the ANL on all the time. The squelch will need some adjusting depending on the strength of the background noise on that particular day. The background noise level will vary from day to day and from place to place.

The squelch sets a level that a signal has to be stronger than to break through so you can hear it. If you set it just above the background level to quiet the reciever, you'll find the varying noise level may constantly break through the squelch. You'll just have to adjust it for the days conditions.

What make and what model radio is it?

Al right, the squelch is great for talking to a buddy @ short range w/good clarity (strong signals). If you want to hear him from a long distance you turn it the other direction, getting more static and other conversations but longer listening range(weaker signals). The other switch can do a bit, but Rande is right on the money. Is your antenna a easily removable one or one that is mounted into the body or the frame?

Isn't Channel 19 one of the two designated emergency channels? (the other being channel 9) Shouldn;t be chatting on that one if it is

Channel 9 is the only recognized emergency channel.

Channel 19 is the commonly used highway channel.

Channel 6 is used if you have a 2 digit IQ and a 3000 watt amp. ;)

Edit: Lister, I see you are from Canada. Are there two emergency channels up there? Here in the U.S. there is only one. Channel 9.

At lot of 4x4s I know use channel 4.
Heard a lot of RV'ers on channel 5
And Super-Bee aka Chief Blackfoot(years ago) ran on channel 6 spreading blood in a 40 mile circle of his ant. ... The FCC nailed him twice that I know of.

Good Luck.. http://www.datsunnissandrivers.com/forum/images/smiles/069.gif.. Don S..

As Rande can vouch for, if you want to have a decent conversation you never get on any of the 40 channels! They are just a starting place. smile.gif I ran the road for 12 years and got so tired of the BS I bought a Ranger 2950 and solved that problem. I'm sure they make better equipment now, that was in the early 90's.

Brad...

I did ask a trucker for help on the highway - he was thrilled to help... guess it solved some boredom. Note: he was driving one of those enourmous Peterbilts with the built-in condos and a trailer that looked like it was 100' long (okay 53' long).

I asked him if he could he me okay. He said I was coming in weak. He asked about my ground and said "Hang on". He then accelerated and got on my *** ! He was about 15 feet off my bumper and said: "Looks like your antenna is mounted on your roofrack. You've got rubber gaskets under the feet of that rack huh... that's causing a ground problem... run wire from the antenna mount to the body..."

He needed a bird's eye view I guess...

Rande. Maybe there isn;t two emerg cahnnels. I just noticed that my cb was a quick selector switch for both channel 9 and 19. Assumed they were both emerg channels.
