So what are the disadvantages to running a longer front shackle? How long would be too long?

This will be for a trail rig that needs to be driven to the trails, so not much in town driving.

#1.) IT changes your caster angle. = too much bad!!
#2.) It can cause more body roll. = too much bad!!

I wouldn't go with a shakle longer that 5-6 inches. Any more than that and you will see problems. I believe stock is 3"s and chevy uses 4"s tha is what I use with no problems.

I have also seen a Wag with extended (homemade) shackles that allowed the whole front axle to shift when the steering wheel was turned redface.gif
It don't take much imagination to see how fun that would be on the road, but it can't be that great on trails either...but the main problem is the angles as previously mentioned...the solution of course, is to drop the rear spring mount proportiaonately with the amount that the shackle is lengthened so that the sngles of the pinion remain unchanged...but that makes your qucik little shackle extension into a big project, so why not buy my Superlift springs instead and be done with it ;)

I have GM rear shackles up front.... 1.5" longer in length which yields .75" of lift and the changes in steering geomtery are hardly felt. I would not go any bigger than this....
