I have noticed a whine or humm or growl (whatever) when I start out from a stop that builts until the trans shifts up to 2nd. Would a Quad make a noise like that with a loose chain? I don't have the Camo Cow here right now to check it out but am trying to get a feel for the problem. I don't hear any noise after speed builds up that could be masked from the normal running noises. Ideas?

OK - now I had a problem that sounds just like yours - it could be your speedo cable.

On my '79 J, when I accelerated from a stop, a loud whining, growling, and sometimes tinny shimmering sound would start and grow in frequency and volume as I accelerated right to 2nd gear then it was gone. It came (from what I couuld tell) the center of the firewall and under the hump in the floor. I was convinced I had a tranny issue. But one day, it continued after the shift point. So, was able to see that it actually varied with speed. Chase: it was the speedo cable. I replaced it (PAIN IN THE BUTT) and no more noise.
It was difficult for me to believe it because the noise was so loud.

Thanks. Something else to check out. Camo Cow is in for a 4" lift right now and a Detroit Locker in the rear end. Got Killer32 bumpers last night. WHAT A PIECE OF METAL! I'll be happy to get them on the Jeep and the winch (Mile Marker 10,500 pounder) in place. Now, if only Con-Ferr would sent me my floor kit and Hi-Lift mount for the roof rack.
