Can anyone tell me the difference? I was thumbing throught IFSJA site and was reading the different t/c's per year. I wasn't aware there were 2 types.
I came across a jeep for sale and was trying to pin down a year, I don't have the vin. Looks to be '79-85. Didn't see the 4wd shift lever, but there was a hole in dash for vac lines.

That's news to me! The only difference in the 229 I know of is the addition of the 4WD light switch after 85.

There is a difference. It's easiest to spot if you look at a prtsa catalog. Type 1 uses a transfer case lockout switch and has a second vacuum motor on the front axle. Type 2 doesn't have the transfer case lockout switch and only has one vacuum motor because the front axle is always engaged.

Aha! I forgot about that.. I have a Type 1 I guess since I have an 83 with the vacuum disconnect front axle.
The 87-91 has a constant lock axle, without needing the vacuum motor for that front axle part. Essentially the transfer-case itself is the same though.

I guess mine is a type 2 then. I didn't think there was any real difference in the t/c itself.
