to the best of my knowledge the factory used 355's mostly up to 79 with some 373. the only problem is that most of them were quadratrack with and offset rear end and a pasenger drop front axle. however,if you can find a narow track pre 80 manual rig the rear was centered and can be swaped out pretty easly. as for the front you could use a pre 80 but you would have to swap the transfer case over to a dana 300 due to the pasenger side drop and i think you would have to have a 4 inch lift to do that. basicaly there is no simple swap to run 355 or 373's your best bet is to regear unless you want to go on and do other mods.

The only thing with a drivers side pumkin front and a centered rear from 80 on with 3.73's are the J-20 trucks with a D44 front and D60 rear. These are way too wide for a stock GW.

Price varies with location. Figure $200 labor plus parts for each axle. You'll need a new carrier for the M20. Maybe spiders too. Around here it's roughly about $1000 to have a shop do both ends.

well ZZ, i've stumbled upon the same problem in the past few months. i'm running 3.07 right now in my 44s. good for highway miles but for me, squat on the trail. the only 3.73 and 4.09 i found were in old j20 and up trucks and they were in d60s with the eight lug pattern. not bad to stick under the ole beast but the wallet couldn't support the weight of that load. i had qtrac but converted. if you have q-trac you'll need to go with the 3.54 because they were found in these jeeps with qtrac and had to be offset. unless you plan to replace the gas tank, i think 3.54 will suit you best, ut anyone correct me if i'm wrong, but this is what i've found.
