I know the neutral-start switch is grownded to the starter solenoid with its own terminal...but the last mechanic that worked on my jeep replaced it with a solenoid with no seperate terminal for the switch.

Now which terminal can i plug in to so my reverse light's will work???

I hope this fixes the problem.I dont feel like replacing the switch itself.

If it doesent fix the prob.. Can I rig something up so my reverse light,s work...I dont realy care about starting or not starting in gear..HELP!!

The switch is probably not working, if you pull the plug off the switch and connect the outside terminals together and the lights work when you turn on the key then the reverse lights work and it is the switch.

If they work, back out the switch a turn or two and see if it will work the lights if it does get a O-ring to put under the switch to hold it out some. The swith has a plunger that has to be released by the shift linkage 100% or it will not work, that is the reason to back it out.

Or you can trace the wires back to the firewall and hook in a toggel switch at the dash to work the lights manualy.

The Neutral Safety switch shouldn't be a factor when it comes to the reverse lights I don't think. My neutral safety switch obviously didn't work when I put motor #3 in there, and what I did to get around it was to buy a starter solenid that didn't have the bottom 5th post. That wire goes to the NSS. The solenid in question, is simply a starter solenid for your same year rig with a manual transmission. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Isn't there a switch down on the steering column like a chebby that looks like a half-moon looking thing to engage the reverse lights? I adjusted one on a 91 Z-71 with a mid 80's column like we've got the other day... check around there too!

The reverse lights are worked by the neutral saftey switch mounted on the 727 trans. Just unplug it and you will see what I mean. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

HAY Snakeyes: since I dont have the 5th post on my solinoid which one can I use???

Or will the switch still work on its own???

Also, I dont have the half moon switch.

Yep. Neutral start\backup light switch controls the reverse lights coming on. The testing procedure Michael F described is in Haynes.

ZZ-2000, the 5th post is the terminal that GETS ground from the neutral switch center post, so that style solenoid is isolated from ground and will only work with the ground feed from the switch were as the one with out the fith post gets it's ground from it's mounting bracket.

So, the solenoid has nothing to do with the back up lights.

If you have a 727, 999, or 904 the switch is just above the pan on the drivers side.

look on the driver's side of the 727 tranny. you'll see a little 3 pin connector. that's what controls the neutral safety switch and reverse lights. i removed mine on purpose cuz the motorcrap has a bad tendency to die in intersections...

i also don't have reverse lights. oh well.

Sorry, but I had to pull this out of the archives.

I didn't have any back up lights, checked the switch, and had a good connection in reverse on one side of the switch.

I hooked it back up and had the drivers side backup working, but not the passenger side. I started investigating the passenger side, looked at the drivers side and it was out again.

Can the switch still be bad?

Thanks,

Craig
