Metal spacers are bad because they conduct heat to the carb. Plastic, fiber, or even plywood is better. Separate barrels are better than open plenum for low-end. The swirl effect is probably too far away from the intake valve to matter. I remember K&N made a snub thing that went on top of the carb to smooth intake. That might be better.
